Food scene

Great bar on the water with live music. Don’t take the route Google Maps gives you. Hug the bay - you’ll go through Rose Haven/Herrington Harbor (where Ketch 22, another great restaurant, is) and then follow Fairhaven Road through the cliffs. You might want to drive by Tacaro Farm at 353 Leitch Road, a historic estate currently on the market $3.35 million. Google it - a photo in the Washington Post will tell you what you’re looking for.

This is one of our favorite restaurants! It’s a 5 minute drive away in Rose Haven at Herrington Harbor - good for sea food and cocktails, book ahead especially on the weekends. Ask for a table on the deck near the water.

Recently re-named the Bakist. It’s a 10 minute walk away from the house. It has great pastries and local organic coffee. They sometimes have birthday cakes and cupcakes in their display, or you can order one in advance on their website. They have some interesting flavors on their website!

This hole in the wall takeout joint makes great, fresh steamed shrimp and seafood to order. You can also buy raw seafood here.

Really good, authentic Mexican food. This place is always busy and has a fun vibe. They have a large outdoor seating area. Free tortilla chips while you wait! The marinated shrimp is good.

Great spot for lunch or a glass of wine with cheese. Started by a couple with culinary training from New York, they curate from local farms. Do a cheese tasting! They will customize a board for you based on your preferences or any theme you can think of.

Neighborhoods

Find out what’s happening on the North Beach City website. On the boardwalk there are is an ice cream shop, wine shop, coffee shop etc. Our favorite store there is Chesapeake’s Bounty- they have great organic vegetables and fresh seafood if you are thinking of cooking fish, crabs or scallops; There is also a great bath shop - Carrie who makes everything there is happy to give our guests local tips! On Saturday mornings between 8-11am there is an organic farmers’ market in town, which is worth a visit. Plenty of fresh vegetables, eggs, meat, plants and sweets. Plaza Mexico (7th Ave and Bay Ave) is good for affordable Mexican food (large portions!); and we think the best Italian in town is Ledo’s Pizza (Bayside Road); Neptunes on 1st and Bayside is the local drinking spot.

Sightseeing

Worth a stroll, dog walk, or to watch the sunset with a drink. The wetlands are a 2 minute walk away- take a left out of Sea Gull Court and walk down Fredrick Avenue towards the apartment complex. Take a right onto Sea Maid Court and walk to the end of the row of apartments. There is the beginning of a trail there that leads into the wetlands and splits- with the trail going one direction into the woods (a 10 minute walk brings you back to Sea Maid Court); the other trail turns into a wooden walkway through the water and into the Wetlands Overlook Park, which is a great place to have a glass of wine in the evening or a picnic during the day. From there you can walk back the same way or down Dayton Avenue and back round into the front entrance to the Burnt Oaks Community; Bug spray will be useful during the summer months.

Stunning, elevated boardwalk passing over wetlands for almost 2 miles. A must-visit. “Between 1900 and 1935, the Chesapeake Beach Railway whisked vacationers from Washington, DC, to the grand hotels, beaches and boardwalk of the resort town of Chesapeake Beach, Maryland. Now tourists and residents alike can enjoy a different kind of luxury as they walk or pedal on the Chesapeake Beach Railway Trail, which occupies a portion of the abandoned railroad corridor. Unusual for a rail-trail, the Chesapeake Beach Railway Trail rests almost entirely on a wooden boardwalk just above serene Fishing Creek and the marshlands surrounding it. Bicyclists needn't worry, though—unlike some boardwalks, the trail is open for bicycling, and the width is adequate for such use.”

Option for a day trip further south down the peninsula, 45 minutes away. This is near Solomons Island on the tip of the peninsula. Vera's Restaurant might be a nice spot for lunch.
