The graveyard behind this church, completed in 1799, is a necropolis of 17th-century Dutch colonial gentry. The shady courtyard filled with burial vaults is on what was once the Stuyvesant family’s farmland. Look for the 1672 burial marker of Peter “Petrus” Stuyvesant, once Secretary-General of New Amsterdam. The iron fence around the church was put up in 1838. Walking along 10th Street, you can see the original 2nd Avenue street sign carved into the iron fence post, a rare sight in the city.
