Koukounaries is a rocky, granite hill, rising 75 m above sea level. It is situated near the bay of Naoussa and Kolymbithres beach. There is an important Mycenaean building complex of the late 12th century BC, its wings, corridors and storage rooms are still visable. This is one of the few sites in Greece with continity from the Bronze, all the way to the Iron ages.

In the wider area and within the rocky volumes we find the Mycenaean citadel on the hill of Koukounaries. A new city flourished during the Geometric period (10th-8th century BC) and a temple was built for the goddess Athena.
