Although now considered one of the most IG-ed stairs in LA, in the 1950s the Micheltorena Stairs connected hilltop Silver Lake residence to the busy streetcar lines along Sunset Boulevard.

The Micheltorena Stairs are the most photographed of the historic staircases found throughout Echo Park and Silver Lake, mostly because they are the easiest to access, but there are many more to discover with better views and interesting street art. Self-guided tours with historical references are detailed in a book called "Secret Stairs: A Walking Guide to the Historic Staircases of Los Angeles," the book is available at Stories in Echo Park, Vroman's Bookstore, Skylight Books, and Book Soup. We have a copy that we loan out to our guests, it is always well-received because the secret stairs are unique to LA and this neighborhood. There's also an app but it's temperamental and abridged.
