The name Eng An Kiong means "palace of salvation in God's eternity". According to the story, in 1825 this temple was built on the initiative of Liutenant Kwee Sam Hway. The Liutenant title given to Kwee Sam Hway was a sign that at that time there was already a large Chinese community. Namely, with an official appointed by the Dutch East Indies government as a leader in the community. Kwee Sam Hway himself is believed to be the seventh descendant of a general during the time when the Ming Dynasty ruled in China. At that time, the descendants of the ruling general were suppressed by the Jing Dynasty, so they were finally forced to flee to the Archipelago. During its construction, the Eng An Kiong temple went through two periods. The construction of the first phase started from the central room and the core in 1825. Then, in 1895 and 1934 other buildings followed in the vicinity. The Eng An Kiong Temple, which is located on Jalan R.E Martadinata, is not only used as a house of worship. This hundreds-year-old temple is also one of the centers of Chinese culture in Malang, with various celebrations and art performances held, such as the lion dance and wayang potehi. This temple is also fairly active in social activities, such as social service and alms to the earth.
