Have a look of the ancient quarries where the famous Parian marble ''lychnites'' was quarried.
The Quarries of Marathi worked from the first Cycladic times (3rd millennium BC) till recently. Visitors will see underground corridors and buildings of the 19th century. Many statues of the antiquity were made of Parian marble, which is considered of fine quality.
The famous Parian merble was in a great demand by many of the great sculptors of various periods, who created important monuments of the antiquity and statues such as : The Venu, the Kore from Acropolis etc.
Next to the picturesque village of Marathi, just a few kilometers from Parikia, there are the ancient marble quarries of Paros. From this area, the famous Parian marble or "lynchitis" was mined. Its name is due to the fact that its mining process took place through deep galleries in the light of the lamps.
Take a bottle of water and a light with you and go to explore Parian marble quarry. Parian marble is well known all over the world. The marble of Acropolis,temple of Apollonas in Delos,temple of Pasidonas in Sounio,Thisio in Athens,temple of Solomon, Afrodite of Milos,Niki of Samothrace and many more. All these monuments are made out of Parian marble and you can visit the exact place that all this marble was mined. Just remember to enter from the south gate! Trully magnificent!
