Food Scene

The food scene in Nashville has exploded these past few years. When I first moved here from Atlanta, which is a real foodie town, I was extremely underwhelmed by what the Nashville food scene had to offer, but man have they upped the ante in recent years!! We now have an eclectic mix of great spots, many of the best ones right here on the east side. I am frequently updating this list because it seems like a new awesome place opens up almost weekly! There are too many to name really, but here is a selection of some of our very favs.
For a coffee experience you'll never forget, check out Barista Parlor!!! It's truly one of a kind and they have amazing coffee!! Try their breakfast too.

We LOVE Rosepepper!!! They actual trend quite a bit on social media with their ridiculously clever ever-changing marquee. It's a great spot for mexican food and they have margaritas that are, well, strong to say the least!! The food is inexpensive and delicious. Their kids menu is the cheapest I've every seen. They are located in a great and super walkable part of East Nashville. Check out the shops and Jenis ice cream across the street afterward.

They have GREAT coffee and muffins, but also are a board game cafe!! We love a good board game and they have a huge selection of fun games and serve beer and even staff a barista that doubles as their "game master." They help teach you the games if you come at night and want to learn something new or they help you pick a game that is right for your mood/group if you find yourself overwhelmed by the selection. BTW: if you are traveling with kids, this is a great spot for you!!! We like taking our two youngins there bc they have a huge selection of kid's games as well. It's located in 5 Points which is arguably the most popular part of East Nashville, so be sure to walk around before or after and see why it's such a great section of East Nash!

Hands down our favorite pizza place. NY Style and delicious!! They can get pretty busy, so call ahead. Dine in or pick up (no deliveries through them but probably can through UberEats, etc.) They have a walk up window open at night. So if you're chillin at the bars in 5 Points and get hungry, you know where to go!

This place is like East Nashville's best kept secret because it's tucked away and not near a main drag. They have the best french fries I've ever had!!! Seriously. They are so good! The burgers and wings are great too. Call ahead for take out. Keep trying if it's busy because they get popular at peak times. They don't have any indoor seating. So if you plan to go there to eat rather than take out, make sure it's a picnic table friendly day. (They do have a few tables that are in a screened in area). We like to grab it to-go and take it just down the street to Shelby Park for a perfect picnic. Make sure you ask to try all their fun dipping sauces for the fries.

Okay, fair warning...the wait here can get extreme so call ahead and ask how long, but man oh man is it worth it!! They have AMAZING burgers and the coolest beer garden backyard seating. Make sure you ask to sit outside. If you can swing it, go during an off-peak time, like early dinner to avoid the longer wait.

It's located in another super cute part of East Nashville, Riverside Village, and they have GREAT coffee and wine and a pretty great food menu to boot. Don't miss Jeni's while you're here for the BEST local ice cream. They have a few different locations, but this is the one closest to our house. The coffee flavor is probably my fav but it's hard to choose. We like to get the trio and share (which they say is 3 half-scoops, but they feel like whole scoops to me)!

We love Tower for quick bites because they are right at the end of our neighborhood. They have a huge menu and breakfast all day as well as local coffee from one of my favs, Bongo Java. The breakfast burrito with chorizo is so so good!! I find myself randomly craving it. Lol!! This is our favorite place to grab a quick breakfast before taking visiting friends/family around town when we are being tour guides. They also have a small but well-stocked grocery selection -- so run up here for things to stock the fridge with during your stay.

For Nashville's iconic hot chicken, go to the original home of hot chicken!!!! There is an ongoing debate in Nashville over who has the best hot chicken and I'm gonna go out on a limb and say it's Princes --- where it all began! They can get pretty crowded with lines out the door during peak times, so keep that in mind, but if you want hot chicken, they won't disappoint. Also, fair warning --- when they say hot, they mean it!!! We've had so many friends and family come to town and really want to go big or go home and go as hot as possible on the hot chicken and they always regret it!! Consider yourself warned. ;-) Unfortunately, their location that was closest to us recently had a fire and has closed permanently so you'll have to drive a bit to go to their south side location. I've heard they are opening another shack closer to us on the north side, but for now Nolensville Pike is where you'll have to go to check them out.

Okay, so if you aren't wanting to make the trek to my aforementioned fav hot chicken place, Prince's, Bolton's is a close 2nd!! And it is MUCH closer to here as well. Just down from us close to 5 Points and downtown they are located on Main St. Don't go too crazy on spicy level unless you want to look at your food instead of eat it!! ;-) Enjoy!

So my final hot chicken recommendation is another dandy. Bonus is they have multiple locations, depending on where you want to go, but this Midtown location is the closest to us and where we usually take out of town guests. It's really close to Music Row which makes it a fun place to check out. Hattie B's has my favorite sides of all the hot chicken places we've tried. Warning, the lines get REALLY long!! So either call ahead for order pick up or be ready to wait and to fight for a table if you are dining in. We actually like picking an order up and then taking it to a nearby park to eat, Centennial Park being one that is fairly close and definitely worth checking out . Don't quote me on this, but I think they are one of the only hot chicken places that can do a gluten free option (which basically defeats the purpose of hot chicken, lol, but if you have someone with you who is gluten intolerant, call and ask them about this option.)

Located in the heart of East Nashville's 5-points, I Dream of Weenie is known both for its quirky modified VW bus and yummy signature charcoal-grilled weenies. Grab a blanket to enjoy a picnic on the lawn. We love taking our kids here for weekend picnics! They even have a bin outside with picnic blankets and a few tables and chairs available as well. Or you can grab a hot dogs to-go and walk around 5 Points. All standard menu items such as the favorite "Rebel Yelp" and a rotating menu of creative Daily Dreams are served on a fresh-baked locally made artisan bun, and are available on your choice of a premium all-beef, turkey, or tofu weenie.

Featuring the best of modern Middle Eastern cuisine, Lyra is a delicious spot right down the street from us. You MUST try their hummus with all the add-ons. It's incredible! This is one of our go-to date night spots and a place we love taking out of town visitors. They change the menu seasonally which keeps it fun and new and have a rotating selection of carefully sourced farm-to-table small plates which are perfect for sharing! Their flagship restaurant is actually in Charleston, but the East Nashville location boasts 70 seats, a great beer, wine and cocktail selection, and the same philosophy of carefully sourced ingredients and an ever changing menu, applied to a full-service restaurant setting. They're open for lunch, dinner and late-night, and their industrial space showcases work from a handful of local artisans, from furniture to signage to audio systems. They take walk-ins, but at peak times, I'd recommend that you make a reservation.

The highly-anticipated café offers all-day brunch, an all-natural wine bar, and a menu focused on sustainable, local ingredients. Lou’s concept ties together a European style with a present-day California vibe. Lou’s bright and eclectic menu features “healthy-ish” cuisine with vegetable-forward dishes and the use of select proteins. The meals are made with local, in-season ingredients. During brunch, guests can enjoy standouts such as the crispy rice and kale salad and roasted banana buckwheat pancakes. Dinner highlights include chilled salmon and pork belly with Chinese five spice caramel. Beverage options range from an iced Vietnamese coffee to a variety of all-natural wines. It can get really busy on the weekends, but they usually have room on their patio. Call ahead and ask about wait times or make a reservation. This place is super cool!!

I was very happy to see that Nashville had not one, but TWO restaurants make Bon Appetit's list of top 50 Best New Restaurants. And as the Tennessean put it, it "turns out the Bon Appetit brass has love for Music City even beyond the two spots editors picked for the list..."Nashville is an essential stop every year on our search for the Hot 10. Even as the food scene there has blown up, it hasn't been watered down: There are still so many truly chef-driven restaurants opening each year that keep things interesting," Deputy Editor Julia Kramer said in a statement." I actually haven't tried Hathorne, but hope to make it a date night spot ASAP. It's a modern, local-veggie driven restaurant in West Nashville, which Bon Appetit described as a place "where farm-to-table feels fresh as ever." Yes, please! If you go, please let me know how great it is! I'm dying to try it.

Tailor in East Nashville adjacent Germantown is another dandy of a restaurant featured on Bon Appetit's 2019 list of top 50 new restaurants AND made it to #7 on their coveted narrowed down "Hot 10" list. I am super anxious to try this one out!!! Tailor was described as a restaurant "where Gujarat meets the Deep South — in dinner party form." Tailor Chef Vivek Surti, a first generation Indian-American, leans heavily on foods from India's western state of Gujarat. Surti likes to call his food "South Asian American." Nom. Nom. Nom.

Located in a super cute up and coming section of East Nashville called McFerrin Park, Folk is a passion project for chef/owner Philip Krajeck and was long in the making, providing him with an outlet to share his love of pizza. According to Eater.com "The space is quite simple compared to the majority of restaurants opening in Nashville these days, and that’s not on accident. Krajeck says that Folk is meant to be a functional neighborhood hangout, a place for repeat visits. Broken down between the main bar and dining room, two walls of windows allow plenty of natural light, with original brick walls and light wood adding to the pared down aesthetic. Seating ranges from first come first served at the bar to two and four-tops in the main dining room with a view of the open kitchen." Krajeck's vision was spot on -- this is a total hot spot for McFerrin Park residents and as it is tucked away in the neighborhood itself, it is off the beaten touristy path and definitely worth trying out!

This place is a newer addition to the east side and has the coolest vibe!! They have a ton of fun cocktails and some good food as well. It's a very short ride from our place or you could even walk on a nice night! Be sure to check out their awesome outdoor seating. And on the last Sunday of every month they are doing a pig roast/ "local luau" where they have different local chefs come in and roast a whole pig! Then for $25 you get a drink, the roast plus sides, and a great luau experience with music and fun!

For a classic speakeasy experience, don't miss Attaboy!! They are not well marked and off an alley, but google will help you find them. Best for smaller groups and they usually have a wait, but you knock, they'll take down how many are in your party and then call you when they have room. There are plenty of other bars walking distance that you can hang at while you're waiting and trust me, it's worth the wait!!! If you're up for a little drive, check out Arrington Vineyards!! The wine is great and you can bring a picnic and enjoy the gorgeous view or buy a bottle and walk through the grapevines. They have live music on weekends certain months of the year and allow you bring in your own food (but not your own alcohol). It's family friendly and a great place to kill time. Check out their website for info on wine tastings and exclusive events. Opt for the longer drive through Nollensville if you have time. It's an adorable and fast growing town south of us. We miss Fat Bottom!! They used to be on the east side, but moved. Anyway, if local brews are your thing, this is one good option.
For a local brewery right around the corner, check out East Nashville Beer Works. They have some GREAT beers on tap that change frequently and a really great food menu to boot. This is a great local hang and super close to our place.

If you're like me and you love a good dive bar, look no further than Dino's! It has been open for years and is a local fav. Don't just take my word for it, Conde Nast Traveller says "East Nashville's self-described "oldest dive bar" hasn't changed a thing about its dimly lit interior, sticky floors, and #backyardvibes. Throw in a busted brick storefront and signage straight from the '80s, and you've got a low-key place to hang out and smoke cigarettes after your meal. You can go anywhere in Nashville and run into a musician/songwriter/Lyft driver (often one and the same), and Dino's is packed with them. This is where the cool kids hang out with big dreams and small wallets. It can get loud inside." The drink menu is pretty small but still more than adequate for your late night booze fix. But the bar food is why this place is a hot spot!!! I love East Nashville because you'll find your classic greasy bar food but with the "farm to table" flair. Take this place for example, which apparently serves grass fed beef, a rather unexpected choice in their divey atmosphere. You HAVE to get their Basket of Fries with the "add ons!" They are a delicious spin off of In and Out Burger's famous "animal style" fries if you are familiar, and they are basically the stuff dreams are made of!! If there was a quintessential drunk food, these fries would be it. ;-) Be sure to check out their small patio out back. It's the best place to sit and enjoy your food/booze.

Tiki bars seem to be all the rage right now and this one lives up to the hype. The decor is super cool and the drink menu doesn't disappoint. Ask them about the drink that that is served on fire, literally! As Nashville Guru says, everything about Chopper is highly customized, from the booth upholstery to the stereo system to the woodwork to the menu’s layout. Robots are a key element throughout, including the bar’s whimsical décor and its elaborate, fictional story of Island X and its artifacts. The artifacts, which are sprinkled throughout the space, range from custom robot masks on the walls to antique tiki glasses to the massive “Golden Robo Uno” robot over the bar area. Seating includes numerous booths and 20 stationary stools at the bar.

Their website puts it best I think: "Whether you’re celebrating a hard day’s work or putting the finishing touches on a long day of play, when you’re in the mood for something different there’s only one place to head: to the roof. Draft cocktails and uncaged spirits abound in this colorful airborne bar scene overlooking downtown Nashville." This place has unrivaled views!!! It's located in the Noelle hotel. I went with a group of friends on a kind of overcast, rainy night and it was still beautiful and they had a covered area for us to hang. The hotel also has a nice lobby bar where we hung out at the end of the night. It's a gorgeous hotel and both bars are top notch.

Parks & Nature

This is our favorite local park. It's huge!! And it has an old railroad track up on a bridge that goes right over the park and is still active. It's also right off the river with many trails for biking and walking and lookout points for the river. The greenway is what you want for biking/hiking and it has entrances right off the park. They have 3 different playgrounds for kids, one of which is nature playground with sand, water, mud, rocks, all the stuff kids love most! :-) We spend so much of our time here as a family.

If nature is your thing, take a short drive from us to Beaman Park. We like going in the back way (message me and I'll help you figure this out) and walking along or even in the creek. It always feels easily 10-15 degrees cooler there in the summers with a full canopy. You don't even need your sunscreen. My kids love how much wildlife we see when there --- snakes, crayfish, unique bugs, butterflies, etc. It's a great place to kill some time connecting with nature between your honky tonk fun. ;-) Oh and no $$ necessary, not even to park.

This is must see for families. There are several play areas at this little park for all ages/abilities. In the center of the park is a sculpture of a dragon that was built by Pedro Silva and decorated by local artists and Nashville volunteers. It is wonderful to climb on and great for family pictures. Fannie Mae Dees Park is often referred to as “Dragon Park,” thanks to Pedro Silva’s sea serpent which was erected in the 70s, and features hundreds of personal designs–including faces, birds, alien creatures, flowers and animals–all made of cut or chipped tiles painted by local artists. Over several months in 1999 (and once again restored recently), neighborhood volunteers gave the beloved reptile much-needed repairs and polish, making him as handsome–and climbable–as ever.

Make sure you walk over the pedestrian bridge while you're visiting!! You'll find the absolute best view off Broadway and downtown, and the river. You can park at Nissan stadium for free most days and walk over the bridge, and let it dump you out just a block from Broadway. It's a great walk even on hot days because there always seems to be a good bit of wind to cool you down when you're on the bridge. Don't forget to take pics from the top of the bridge!!!

Be sure to check out our famous downtown farmer's market, especially on the weekends when there are vendors aplenty. Okay, why am I adding a hotel recommendation when you've chosen an airbnb??! Because the art at this hotel is so freaking rad! I always take my out of town friends and fam to check it out. The bottom three floors host something like 10,000 sq. ft. of art. The story goes that the owners started this small boutique chain of hotels because they apparently are billionaires of the Kentucky Bourbon persuasion and they had "too much" contemporary art and nowhere to store it. Oh, to be rich! ;-) Lol. Anyway, they carefully curate the art around quarterly themes and they feature very avant garde and sometimes rique' pieces. The owners feel that art should be more accessible to all, and therefore there is no charge for entry to their museums and all museum tours are FREE. The Nashville location offers a guided museum " Tuesday Tipsy Tour." Grab a discounted drink from the Tipsy Tour Menu (available Tuesdays from 6pm-7pm for tour guests only) at the bar in Gray & Dudley and join them in the lobby at 7pm to explore with a guided tour. They also have a regular tour on Thursdays at 5:30. Pro Tip: If you plan to explore downtown, parking can be CRAZY and expensive. If you valet at 21c before 5pm and grab a bite or drink at their restaurant, Gray+Dudley, (which is delicious btw and reasonably priced), they offer free valet and don't mind if you eat and then go explore downtown leaving your car.

We have a wonderful little art museum on Broadway that is worth checking out even if you came to Nashville for the music scene rather than the art scene. The Frist is a bit on the small side as museums go, but I like that aspect because you can cover more ground in a shorter amount of time, making it a great place to explore if you find yourself with a couple unallocated tourist hours. Check out their website for a list of current exhibits: https://fristartmuseum.org/. Pro Tip: if you happen to find yourself here on the first full weekend of the month and are a Bank of America customer (credit card or checking), you simply show your BofA card at the box office and they waive your admission! This is true of many museums. Check out a full list here: https://about.bankofamerica.com/en-us/what-guides-us/arts-and-culture/partners.html#fbid=vGzMwvFJmXE. Oh and families, there is a great section of this museum that is called ArtQuest and it is chock full of hands on art activities for the kiddos. Kids admissions are always free at the Frist and on Mondays they have family programming. This is a great spot to take the kids if you are traveling with yours.

Printer's Alley is a famous alley in downtown Nashville, Tennessee, between Third and Fourth Avenues, running from Union Street to Commerce Street. The portion of the alley between Union and Church Street is the home of a nightclub district that dates back to the 1940s. At the beginning of the 20th century, Printer's Alley was home to a thriving publishing industry. The area was home to two large newspapers, ten print shops, and thirteen publishers. When Printer's Alley first became a nightclub and entertainment district, sale of liquor for on premise consumption was illegal in Nashville (and throughout Tennessee). Restaurants and clubs in the alley served liquor anyway, often claiming it had been "brown bagged" (brought in by customers). Law enforcement agencies normally looked the other way on such sales. Liquor sales in restaurants were finally legalized in 1968. One famous Printer's Alley club was Jimmy Hyde's Carousel Club, a jazz venue frequented by many Nashville musicians, among them a significant number of studio musicians who loved jazz despite spending their day backing country singers. These players would jam after the sessions were done and the music was often jazz. Among them were Chet Atkins, Floyd Cramer, Boots Randolph, Bob Moore, Brenton Banks, Buddy Harman and Hank Garland. Later, Randolph purchased the Carousel. There is so much history over there! You can feel it oozing out of the brick-lined alleyways. I love walking this area and stopping to grab drinks at Bourbon Street Blues and Boogie Bar.

This is a GREAT local grocery store not far from us. Almost everything they sell is organic which makes shopping consciously so much easier. They have a delicious hot bar for breakfast, lunch or dinner, and lots of tables if you want to eat it there. They have a great selection of local and/or authentic beer and wine. Running smack in the middle is Lower Broadway where Honky Tonks play world-class live music 365 days of the year and never charge a cover. In the area “North of Broadway” are historic buildings reimagined into music attractions, boutique hotels, art galleries, and chef-driven restaurants, and “South of Broadway” are newly constructed hotels, eateries, music venues, and attractions. Wherever you go, there is plenty of fun to be had around Nashville’s incredibly walkable downtown campus." -visitmusiccity.com

"Nashville’s Wedgewood-Houston (or “WeHo”) neighborhood is located a few blocks south of downtown Nashville with borders defined by Houston Street to the north, Wedgewood Avenue to the south, Eighth Avenue South to the west and Fourth Avenue South/Nolensville Pike to the east. The proximity to downtown, relatively affordable rents and real estate prices, and the number of old warehouses, factories and garages have attracted artists, musicians and entrepreneurs to open restaurants, distilleries, breweries, galleries, studios and workshops in the area. Look for major growth in the years to come: Apple Music’s Nashville office and a SoHo House Hotel are slated to open here soon." -visitmusiccity.com

"In the area quite literally south of downtown Nashville’s Broadway is SoBro, a district that has undergone a major revitalization in recent years. Unlike its neighbor North of Broadway up the hill, this area is known for all things new – the city’s sprawling convention center, live music venues, major hotel brands, boutique properties, restaurants, bars, and even the just over 10-year-old Schermerhorn Symphony Center designed to look like it’s been there for decades. Nashville’s Music Mile connecting downtown with Music Row ends in South of Broadway, a mile-long stretch dotted with notable music attractions like the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum and the Music City Walk of Fame Park, a landmark tribute to those from all genres of music who have contributed to the world through song." -visitmusiccity.com

"Sandwiched between downtown, Music Row, West End and Hillsboro Village is Midtown, an area adjacent to the prestigious Vanderbilt University. Here, students, music industry folks and business executives converge with visitors in the neighborhood’s many chef-driven restaurants and bustling bars. Its walkability, multitude of hotel options and proximity to both downtown and other unique neighborhoods make it an exceptionally convenient area to stay in Nashville. Adjacent to Midtown, find the epicenter of West End. Centennial Park located here is one of Nashville’s premier urban parks located adjacent to Vanderbilt University and home to a full-scale replica of the Greek Parthenon. Just up the way is Elliston Place where some of the city’s most storied rock clubs can be located – hence the microneighborhood’s “Elliston Place Rock Block” nickname – as well as several eclectic dining options. Further south down West End is Belle Meade, a wealthy residential community known for its stately homes including two historic properties that can be toured by visitors: Belle Meade Plantation and Cheekwood Estate & Gardens." -visitmusiccity.com
