Jeffry’s Wine Country BBQ(819 12th St. Suite B) is a great spot to try tri-tip, the Central Coast barbecue specialty, along with various smoked and grilled meats served as tacos instead of sandwiches (though you can certainly order classic BBQ plates and sandwiches). We vote this the Best Gourmet BBQ and great set up in the downtown square!

Paso Robles’ most iconic farm-to-table restaurant turns 13 this year. The black lentil tacos, cured smoked salmon, and avocado toast are must-order menu standbys (this author has been enjoying those on SF-LA road trips for over a decade), but almost everything else on the menu changes frequently with what’s bountiful at nearby farms and markets. The plant-filled courtyard patio is straight out of a “California Good Life” travel magazine, and take note: it’s one of the few sit-down restaurants in town that is open for lunch on most weekdays.

There’s an irresistible sense of whimsy and fun when you step in this posh yet relaxed restaurant right by Downtown City Park. Its name translates to “the little rascals,” an ode to owners Courtney and Julien Asseo’s three kids, and there’s a true sense of joie de vivre at the bustling bar or a table in striking distance of the glass-enclosed wine cellar. Julien is the son of one of Paso Robles’ most celebrated winemakers (Stephan Asseo of L’ Aventure), but he opted for the culinary route, learning his craft in Paris and Las Vegas under legends like Guy Savoy and Joel Robuchon. At “LPC,” he perfects classic French dishes (the tarte flambée is exemplary), while deftly sending bistro standards into fresh, captivating directions like Burgundy escargot risotto. It’s only a matter of time before he’s winning James Beard awards.

Best views in Paso (this is a high end winery, so be prepared to pay higher wine prices and tasting fees) DAOU Vineyards was born out of a desire to find the best terroir in California. Aspiring winemakers Georges and Daniel Daou found it in Paso Robles at a breathtaking site in the Adelaida District now called DAOU Mountain. The Daous were the first to bring cabernet clones from the most iconic regions around the world to Paso Robles and dreamed of making the region known for incredible cabernet and Bordeaux varietals in a land of zinfandel and Rhone-style wines. DAOU Vineyards has since produced the highest-rated cabernet sauvignon in the Central Coast region and nearly 60% of Paso Robles grapes are cabernet sauvignon or Bordeaux varietals. You’ll need to be thoughtful about a visit to DAOU Vineyards, as it is advised to book your desired experience six weeks in advance. From guided walking tours around DAOU Mountain and off-roading adventures to elegant tastings with panoramic views of the vineyards, there’s something for every type of oenophile to experience here. Those new to the DAOU portfolio should try the 2019 Estate Soul of a Lion ($170), which boasts a 97+ rating from Robert Parker and is a brilliant showcase of DAOU Mountain’s unique terroir.

Located in West Paso Robles, Booker Wines was founded by winemaker and farmer Eric Jensen, and his wife, Lisa. After working with other acclaimed wineries in the region, inclduding Saxum and L’Aventure, Jensen released his first vintage in 2005 and has become renowned for his Rhone-style wines, as well as his passion project, My Favorite Neighbor. Booker Wines is a CCOF-certified, solar-powered farm that’s as passionate about what isn’t going into its wine bottles as it is about what does. Eric and Lisa opened up a new visitors space in 2021 with a design that mirrors the estate’s growing principles. Inspired by California minimalism, the estate is full of indoor-outdoor entertaining spaces that offer terraces for tranquil tastings and bocce fields for those looking to make an afternoon out of a trip to Booker. Check out the label’s 2019 Fracture ($98) which is Booker’s estate-exclusive flagship wine.

Located in the Linne Valley just a few miles east of Paso Robles, Sculpterra Winery is a 135-acre estate that grows both grapes and pistachios. The estate is owned by Dr. Warren and Kathy Frankel, who moved here in 1979 and can often be found riding their horses across the property. Their son Paul, who grew up at the estate, became Sculpterra’s head winemaker in 2008. The winery produces two labels: its eponymous brand and Héroe, both of which have produced numerous award-winning wines. Sculpterra Winery & Sculpture Garden is a must-visit for lovers of both wine and art, and walk-ins are welcome. The visitor’s center features a multi-million dollar sculpture garden that highlights an array of prominent artists. There’s always something going on at the winery, be it live music every weekend, monthly festivals, or intense table tennis matches at the winery’s “Central Park West” gaming area. Sculpterra recommends starting out with a bottle of the 2019 Figurine ($60), which is made of 50% primitivo, 40% cabernet sauvignon, and 10% merlot.

Founded in 1981, Adelaida Vineyards & Winery is home to seven organically farmed estate vineyards in the coastal-influenced Santa Lucia Mountain range in West Paso Robles. Adelaida was one of the first 10 wineries in the AVA and quickly became the premier winery of its namesake district. While the winery started out with a sole focus on cabernet sauvignon, it has since expanded to produce chardonnay, pinot noir, and the dry-farmed zinfandel and Rhone-style wines Paso Robles is known for. All visits to Adelaida Vineyards & Winery require a reservation to enjoy its array of tasting experiences across its wine estate vineyards, organic walnut ranch, and intentional wetlands. Tasting appointments are available Wednesdays through Mondays with three different experiences starting at $25 per person. The winery recommends introducing yourself to the portfolio with the 2019 Anna’s Red ($50), which Adelaida considers to be an ideal vintage.

Paso Robles was named one of the "52 Places to Go" by the New York Times. However, the main reason that the city received that honor is still as relevant today as it was in the Before Times: Bruce Munro’s flower bloom-evoking masterpiece, Sensorio. The centerpiece work of art is the stunning “Field of Light,” a lit-up meadow of brilliantly colored flowers (actually about 58,800 stemmed spheres lit by fiber optics). Almost equally impressive are the “Light Towers,” an installation made of wine bottles located beyond the field. And it’s all so surreal because not only is this world renowned artistic spectacle in a random, small valley near the airport, there isn’t even an easily visible sign at the entrance. That being said, in a few short years, Sensorio has swiftly become one of California’s signature artistic sight. It’s about double the price for the VIP Experience, but it is worth keeping in mind that the single best viewpoint of the installation really is from the VIP Terrace’s elevated perch. // 4380 Highway 46 East (Paso Robles),

The Remedy spirits lounge offers selection of rare spirits The Remedy. It’s tucked inside The Alchemists’ Garden and offers an exclusive epicurean experience with only 10 seats and over 100 rare spirits. The Remedy invites patrons into an intimate setting to sip on a spirit of their choice, or indulge in one of the many molecular cocktails. The Remedy will host a members-only private locker program. It allows members to keep purchased personal bottles in a locker and gives them access to reservations and private events. Guests can check in with the hosts at The Alchemists’ Garden to book their experience. Upon arrival for their reservation, they will be led to a door on the side of the restaurant’s vine-covered external wall and ushered into the dark and intimate setting. Each cocktail offering is served from a custom-built mobile bar that is rolled up to the individual tables.
