Port Angeles downtown is 25 minute drive, a little more in summer, but they have some great restaurants. The Next Door Gastro Pub is one of our favorites. The Next Door is hugely popular, for dinner or lunch plan on a wait as they are small, don't take reservations and oh, so very good. They serve all day. Great food, great beer selection, fun atmosphere, always fresh unique seafood options. Arrive early or late for dinner or plan on a long wait. *Our tip for the Next Door, call ahead and ask to put on their list. Wait times are often an hour or more and often longer than they say. Walk around the water front and enjoy the view while you wait for your table.

The Dungeness Spit is one of those strange geographical features that one tends to read about in books, but rarely encounters in the real world, yet it is right here in Sequim. It is a long, stable sand spit, jutting out into the Strait of San Juan de Fuca, at 5.5 miles in length, the Dungeness Spit is the world's longest naturally occurring sand . It may change slightly from year to year, but over all, it remains the same. It offers a 11 mile beach hike, round trip, away from the mainland, and out into the sea. At the end of the spit is the Dungeness Lighthouse, along the way to the lighthouse, there is sand, sea, and tons of driftwood. There is also wildlife: sea birds, seals, and eagles.

Salt Creek Recreation Area is a 196 acre scenic park, 15 miles west of Port Angeles. The park has stunning views of the Strait of Juan de Fuca and Victoria BC. Salt Creek is home to some of the most exceptional tide pools in the Northwest, visit during low tide and you will not be disappointed. You will have to climb down steep steps to get to the tide pool areas. Salt Creek has sandy beaches, upland forests, rocky bluffs, and hiking trails. The park was previously Camp Hayden, a WW II military camp, there still are several structures left from the fort. Now it's a county park for day use and overnight camping. There is a small entry fee to enter the park, they don't charge during winter.
Obstruction Point Road is as much of an adventure as the hiking trails are once the road ends. Be sure to read Obstruction Point Rd information before attempting to drive to the trail head! This is one of the most amazing hikes a day tripper can take in the Park. It takes you to the top of the world, out among the great mountains, in wild alpine country, far past an everyday experience. The trail itself is easy to follow, and depending on how far you go, it need not be strenuous, but it takes you to a totally different place - a place of high far mountains and icy glaciers, a place of fragile alpine plants and rocky slopes. The air is dry and thin here, take water and wear sunblock.

Obstruction Point Road is, probably, the Washington's scariest road and our absolute favorite. Don't drive this road unless it is dry and pleasant weather. It is not a quick or easy drive but the views are breathtaking, out of this world, you will get a real feel of the ruggedness and wildness of the park. It is a 7.6 mile long, 1.5 lane dirt road, with many steep drop offs where the shoulder should be and so narrow at times you need to keep your eyes open for slightly wider points to pull off or back up to let another car pass. It usually doesn't open until mid summer, thru mid October. The road is on your left just before the Hurricane Ridge visitor center, its easy to miss.

Pillar Point is a 5 acre county park, nothing fancy, remote and isolated, with huge beach access. If your exploring Hwy 112, its a great spot to pull off the road and picnic with a scenery palette that can't be beat.

Marlyn Nelson County Park at Port Williams, is a little gem of a park. The park is only 1 acre but has 1000ft of beach tidelands that connect to state owned tidelands to the north. This seldom used, quiet little park has panoramic views of the coast and Protection Island. There are a few picnic tables with fire rings, 2benches overlooking the water and 1 older vault toilet. The pleasant drive takes you through the fertile dungeness valley farm fields. The best part is it's right here in Sequim.

Jim and I enjoy this road for the adventure and sheer beauty of the drive, and that it ends at a trail head with several different hiking options. The road had been closed for several years due to sections of the road being washed away and once again leads into the Elwha Valley. Whiskey Bend road, is a one and a half lane dirt and gravel driving challenge. The drive itself is part of the adventure and easily done if you pay attention to the road, keep an eye open for spots to pull over before passing cars, and be friendly to other drivers. This 4 mile stretch of road follows the river bed climbing through verdant rain forest ending at a trail head with several fantastic hiking options.

Plan your drive up to Hurricane Ridge early or later in the day to avoid a long wait at the ranger station gate. The parking area on top fills quickly, to reduce congestion, one car leaves, one car admitted. It is located in the Olympic National Park so you will have an entry fee. The drive up to the ridge is an adventure in itself, don't be scaredy-cat, there are lots of pullouts, it is a drive not to be missed! Hurricane Ridge Road is, probably, the Washington's Best Driving Road. Your adventure starts in Port Angeles at 200 feet above sea level and climbs to an elevation of 5,242 feet. The 17 mile adventure takes you up a paved, 2 lane, steep and curvy road.
