Absolutely stunning place to visit, from the most inactive to the seasoned hiker. You will love the Cove, Tarn, Gordale Scar and Janet's Foss. The fight scene between Harry Potter and Voldemort was filmed on top of the Cove's distinctive limestone pavement.

Shibden Hall is best known for being the home of Anne Lister, an Icon for the LGBTQ community and a well known pillar of the 19th century Halifax business community. Just like New Hall, it is a Tudor Gentry House, but just slightly younger than our house. If you are a fan of the Gentleman Jack series on BBC television then you will love this visit.

Halifax’s world famous Piece Hall is definitely worth a visit, it has; boutique shops, bars, dining, events and during the summer outdoor concerts that have seen Duran Duran, Manic Street Preachers, Paul Weller, Nile Rodgers and many more

Food scene

Traditional Italian food, always a hit. We love visiting here as the waiting staff are on point, the food is consistently excellent and the prices are not over the top. Make sure you book in advance.

This Indian restaurant has been a mainstay in Huddersfield forever. OK, the building & decor is starting to show its age a little bit, but remember, you came here for the food. And the food is just brilliant. The standout is the Chef's Nirali Special, which is just the best "catch-all" curry you can get. It is mild as it comes, but have a word with the waiter and they can pep it up a little in the kitchen to suit your taste. All their curries are a joy, but remember, I did recommend the Nirali Special.

I had heard great things of this Tapas restaurant for a while and one of the chefs was a family friend. Foolishly I put off going for ages, but when Belinda and I went… Woah. This is Tapas, but at the next level. Seriously, it is brilliant, there are literally no weak spots from food to drink and service. Book well ahead as it is crazy popular, but here’s my tip, it’s a bit risky but if you have an impulse to go, give them a call and ask to sit at the pass. You can’t reserve these seats, they’re limited and you’ll have to walk up and hope it’s empty, but you get a fantastic immersive meal sat right in the kitchen. Awesome!

Another Italian restaurant in Halifax, but it is worth it. A great decor, a real buzz to the place and the food is really good. A tad more expensive than some other places, it is worth it if you want to have a treat. Downstairs in the restaurant (not upstairs or outside) is our recommendation. There are some cracking bars all around it too, in particular Kobenhavn and The Meandering bear. Make sure you book in advance.

The Napolitano family that run Sapore are the most wonderful, accommodating and attentive staff you will encounter. The menu is all the greatest hits of Italian cuisine and the food is consistently good. A great place to brush up on your Italian too, no matter what level of competency you have.

Bar Scene

We happened on this bar. Sandwiched between an office block and a Kwik Fit franchise, it really is the most unassuming place, but once you go inside you realise just how quirky and welcoming it is. the bar staff are lovely, the beer is brilliant and the fact it is a bicycle repair shop during the day is as esoteric as it gets. I recommend a pint of Vedett which is really the most tasty and rare of lagers or Vocation (if you really hate lager, but hey, its not 1981 and this isn't Skol) . There are a few other good bars in Brighouse, but be careful, there are plenty to avoid, so check out my other recommendations in this up and coming town.

The Crafty Fox is on the High Street in Brighouse and started out life selling cans and bottles of craft beer. It has quickly morphed into a really popular and lively place to have a drink, sing song and catch up with friends. No more, no less. Just a good, solid bar you can have fun in. Enjoy. Another solid, independent bar. This really is the definition of quirky, run by a group of music promoter friends, the staff are brilliant and the drink selection is epic. You really can't go wrong, just don't sit in our corner of the bar, we have a permanent reservation at the weekend 😀

A pub just up the road. It’s a local, it’s nice, the food is really solid pub fare and the beer selection is really good, with hand pulled guest beers rotating on a regular basis and a good selection of spirits. The staff are really good and Cameron is an up and coming landlord with a good sense of community.

A great little independent craft bar that has something for everyone and a really unique feel. Right in the heart of Halifax it is in a covered arcade next to the historic indoor market.

Only recently opened, Vocation is the Town Centre bar owned by one of the best craft beer labels in the UK. Vocation are a Halifax brewery, based in nearby Cragg Vale, on the road to Hebden Bridge. The beer selection is brilliant and the adjoining Pizza restaurant is great for just a slice or a full 18” Pizza Pie. Buzzing, friendly and fun, we love it!

Superb bar and music venue. Michael and the team have supported new music in Halifax and the North for decades and this new incarnation of the Grayston now gives you the chance to see some of the best local, national and international bands in a great atmosphere, with an amazing beer selection. Try the Cloudwater beer, Fuzzy is a standout Hazy IPA.

City/town information

Leeds is great, it really is. It's a busy, vibrant, progressive city and you will find everything you need here, from a Five Guys to the Opera. Get an Uber or catch the train and really go for it. My personal standouts are Bibi's Italian restaurant, Ivy Asia, El Gato Negro and drinks along The Calls - just ask, the locals are real friendly. The Leeds United mural trail is also worth a day out, amazing street art illustrating the history of the storied football team and the city.

Walks

I have been asked for some tips on nice hikes / places to visit. We absolutely love this place, it is over the other side of the valley from New Hall and is a little bit of a challenge, given the steepness of the valley sides, but it has a spectacular view of the Calder Valley from the aptly named "Wilderness" between Upper Edge and Lower Edge and also the Nature reserve itself, which is a reclaimed landfill and former site for the Flyash deposits from Elland Power Station. It's gorgeous now though. If you go to the Maps section of your favourite search engine and get directions from HX5 9PH to Cromwell Bottom Nature Reserve, choose the walking option and then choose the walk that follows the B6114.
