Freshwater Lake is the largest of Dominica's four lakes. It is located at just over 2,500 ft above sea level and is the natural source of the Roseau River. The lake has been dammed to provide water to generate electricity. Freshwater Lake requires a steep climb but the views are worth it. You’ll need to hike to this lake, the island’s largest but ut won’t be lonely. Hundreds of hummingbirds can be seen along the way. It is beautiful spot in which to cool off since it’s at a higher elevation. There are opportunities for breathtaking views, beautiful hikes, kayaking and a bar is open at peak times. Hiking boots or appropriate footwear is recommended.

The capital city, Roseau, is surrounded by the Caribbean Sea, the Roseau River, and Morne Bruce, and is built on the site of the ancient Kalinago Indian village of Sairi. The quaint town is a picturesque array of 18th century French architecture, and is small enough to be easily explored on foot. The oldest part of town is around Old Market Square, formerly the original slave market. The Old Market square is now a vibrant craft vendors’ market for cruise and other visitors. The Old Post Office building is now the home of the Visitors’ Information Centre, and the Dominica Museum, which showcases a small collection of artifacts tracing the island’s history. The Roseau Cruise Ship berth sits across from the Museum and cruise visitors walk off the ships directly into the city for shopping and tours.

The picturesque Indian River, which flows into Prince Rupert Bay at Portsmouth, is the widest of the 365 rivers on the island of Dominica and was once a Kalinago (Carib) settlement. An hour-long ride along this river, which was featured in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, in a hand-oared river boat is both relaxing and educational. The shore is lined with mangrove trees, whose buttress roots spread up to 20 feet. Clear, brackish water is a playground for young barracuda and crayfish. Except for singing yellow warblers, flitting hummingbird, or wing-flapping egrets, there's an eerie silence. To arrange a trip, stop by the visitor center in Portsmouth and ask for one of the "Indian River boys" of the Portsmouth Indian River Tour Guides Association. Most boat trips take you up as far as the Indian River Bush Bar, where you can get a snack and a drink (local juice or rum). You can usually make an optional guided walking tour of the swamplands and the remnants of one of Dominica's oldest plantations. Tours last one to three hours and cost roughly $20 per person (it varies depending on the guide) plus $5 for a national park day pass.

These famous twin waterfalls are a 20-minute drive from Roseau. It's a short 10 to 15 minute walk along a well-maintained path to the viewing platform, where you can photograph both falls. As you walk the path, be sure to stop at the warm spring that flows across the trail. The more daring can continue on to swim in the refreshing waters of the smaller waterfall or find the hot springs of the tallest fall.

"Boeri" is Dominica's second largest lake and is located at about 2,800 ft elevation, between Morne Micotrin (Macaque) and Morne Trois Pitons. The lake is located in the crater of an old volcano in which Micotrin was formed, separating it from Freshwater Lake. Boeri Lake is almost circular in shape and at least 117 ft deep. Fed by rainfall and runoff, the water level varies with the seasons, reaching its highest point between October and December. Walk up the ridge to Boeri Lake for some superb panoramic views of Dominica. The hike to Boeri Lake begins at Freshwater Lake and is a moderate 1-1/4 mile walk. The path is rocky and can be slippery, especially in the rain.

Bubbling from a volcanic crater within Morne Aux Diables is the Cold Soufriere. While Dominica is known for its hot springs and boiling lakes which spurt steaming mineral water from below ground, Cold Soufriere is a unique volcanic manifestation. The water here is not hot, but cold, though the same features as other hot springs are evident. Sulphuric gas fills the air and the rock formation is marked by eerie grey, white and clay porous stone. Acidic, healing water seeps up from the ground almost eerily trickling down into small streams and hissing at times of drought. Interesting animals populate the pools and are quite a site for the curious traveller.
