Soar above a breathtaking landscape, sculpted over time, decorated by nature, and enjoyed by generations. Stand on top of Dunstable Downs for a view that will simply take your breath away. These Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) are designated for the quality of their chalk grasslands. As well to two Scheduled Ancient Monuments (Five Knolls and Medieval Rabbit Warrens) there are many other historical features and the site has much to offer you. The chalk grasslands of the Downs have miles of footpaths and several circular walks, fascinating history, and an abundance of plants and wildlife. Dunstable Downs is within the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and the highest point in Bedfordshire. The wind-swept ridge provides ideal conditions for a variety of air sports, especially kite flying. On calmer days it's the ideal site to enjoy the view and a picnic. Please note: Chilterns Gateway Centre is owned by Central Bedfordshire Council and managed by the National Trust.

ZSL Whipsnade Zoo is the UK's largest zoo and one of Europe's largest wildlife conservation parks. It is home to 3,626 animals, many of which are endangered in the wild. The majority of the animals are kept within sizeable enclosures.

Dunstable is the oldest charter town in Bedfordshire and is currently home to approximately 36,000 residents, who regularly elect their own Town Council and Central Bedfordshire Council representatives to manage local affairs. The earliest recorded residents of Dunstable lived on the Downs, on hills that originated at the same time as the Himalayas. Nowadays the ‘settlement’ nestles between the downs, modern men no longer need to keep watch for sabre-toothed tigers wandering close to their door! Dunstable is fiercely proud of its rich heritage yet, whilst it may be steeped in history, it is very much a town in the present, working towards a bright future. Opened in April 2007, The Grove theatre provides Dunstable with 780-seat purpose-built art and entertainment centre. The development which includes accompanying bars and restaurants overlooking the beautiful re-landscaped Grove House Gardens provides a striking heart to the cultural identity of the area and a venue for a variety of events. Priory House Heritage and Tourist Information Centre also offer a full programme of entertainment and exhibitions as well as an insight into Dunstable’s amazing past.
