The hill of the medieval acropolis of Aegina, called Paleochora, rises just past the Agios Nektarios Church, on the left. Small scattered churches, 36 of the original 365, dot the hillside, alongside ruined cottages and towers. At an altitude of 355 meters, this is the ''Palia Chora'' (Old Town) of Aegina. Its history dates back to the 8th century AD, when fearing attack from the Venetians and Saracen pirates, the Aeginites left the coastal areas to seek refuge in the island's interior. They remained there for 10 centuries. The churches and wall frescoes seen there are from various periods, from the 13th to the 18th centuries.

The Temple of Aphaia is one of the most beautiful classical temples in Greece and one of the oldest surviving. It stands on top of a pine-clad hill above Agia Marina from where you have a marvelous view of the mainland. The first temple on the site (700 BC) was dedicated to Aphaia, a deity from Crete. The Doric temple we see today was built about 490 BC of local porous sandstone, and it served as a model for the constructionn of the Parthenon and othe temples in Greece, Asia and southern Italy. On a clear day, you can make out the Temple of Poseidon at Sounio , as well as the Acropolis of Athens. It is said tht the three temples form an isosceles triangle (the sacred triangle of antiquity) In 1811, the Englishman Cockerell and the German won Hallerstein. stole the sculptures of the pediments and smuggled them abroad, to sell them later to King Ludwig of Bavaria. Today they are on display at the Glyptothek of Munich. On the grounds of the Temple of Aphaia stand the Museum of Aphaia where everything that remains from the temple is housed. One of the most important artefacts is the reconstructed section of the pediment of the temple, the copy of goddess Athena and the votive tablet (560 BC) on which is written that the temple is dedicated to the goddess Aphaia. The hill of Kolona, a five-minute walk north of Aegina Town, was inhabited in prehistoric times through the classical period. Extensive walls and foundations have been discovered and excavations are still in progress. One erect column is all that remains of a Temple of Apollo built in the 6th century BC. During the excavations, a cemetary was discovered. Gold pieces of jewellery were found in its tombs and are exhibited in the British Museum. At the entrance to the site is a mosaic floor surviving from a 7th century synagogue. The Archaeological Museum is also at this site and contains a small but rich collection of pottery and sculpture from all periods of Aegina's history. One of the most significant exhibits of the Archaeological Museum of Aegina is the statue of the Sphinx, a vovite monument of the early classical period (460 BC) which was dedicated to the Temple of Apollo. It is an extraordinary sculpture, with a head of a woman and a body that is half eagle and half lion. The Sphinx of A egina is from the 1903 Kolona excavations. Aegina was the centre of one of the best known schools of sculpture during archaic times. Its evolution is illustrated by the sculptures of the pediment of the two archaic temples of Apollo, the two Sphinxes of the sancturary and some reliefs (realy votive column-archaic, post archaic) TIP TO OUR GUESTS:Before visiting suggest to call first to make sure that the site and the museum are open as the various time tables on the internet sites are not updated. To visit also the Musem is a must _located in the same area. A very good idea for an excursion from Aegina is the nearby Epidaurus (Epidavros) since, if planned correctly it combines great theatrical plays and concerts at its world 's famous ancient theater. On an event day, boats depart at 1800hrs from the port of Aegina arriving at New Epidaurus 1hr later where a bus takes you to the ancient theater (20mins duration). After the play/concert the bus departs at 0100am to drive you back to the boat that will take you to Aegina. IT REALLY IS A LIFETIME EXPERIENCE.

SHORT TOUR

Aegina an island as small as it is charming, simple, yet mysterious. Its magnificent light reflects on the rocky slopes and fertile pistachio trees, magically illuminating the translucent waters. Its white crown, the ancient temple of Aphaia, the Parthenon and the temple of Poseidon at Sounion form an imaginary triangle which transmits spiritual energy. Aegina is just an hour away from Piraeus. Visitors are greeted by a semicircle of neoclassical two-storey houses, painted with ochre and sky blue ribbons. The town of Aegina brims with life. Cafes, tavernas, small shops, traditional groceries, a lively fish market, bars, streetlets, fragrant courtyards, delicacies from the bakery baskets, all compose the tapestry of its everyday life. Naturally, Art is everywhere. Clay could be the island's emblem, as this is where the ''wise'' Aeginetan jug was born, and several ceramic artists from Greece and abroad have their home base here. This island of unique light has always been a source of inspiration in antiquity, it was one of the main centers of sculpture production. In the 1960's prominent painters and sculptors such as J. Moralis, N. Nikolaou, Ch. Kapralos, G. Pappas and pioneering architects like D. Pikionis, K. Dekavallas and A. Konstantinidis took refuge on Aegina, in order to think in depth and create. Aegina has a long history. Its first inhabitants settled here around 3000BCE. Thanks to the development of commercial and maritime activity, Aeginetans were able to mint their first silver coins in the seventh century BCE. Looted by the Romans, the island flourished again in the Byzantine era, with Paliachore as its centre. Razed to the ground by pirate Barbarossa, it recovered thanks to the tenacity and visions of its inhabitants. On the 2nd April 1827, it became the first capital of modern Greece and evolved into a wellspring of culture under Ioannis Kapodistrias, the visionary leader of the newly-founded Greek state. The island knew prosperity and fame from the 19th century onwards, thanks to the sponge trade and later through the production of retsina wine and its famed pistachio. Today's Aegina is nostalgic and authentic. As it is close to Athens, several Athenians and foreigners have settled here permanently. The businesspeople, diplomats, eminent artists and actors who come here all seem connected by a discreet thread in a sweet, quiet conspiracy.

The small fishing village of Perdika lies on the southern point of the island. This is perhaps one of the most picturesque spots on the island and is still characterised by the Aegian style of square houses and narrow streets. The traditional fish tavernas and cafes are situated on a raised terrace above the small harbour and attract day visitors from both Athens and Aegina Town.It is claimed that this the best place on the island to enjoy a fish lunch overlooking the peaceful bay and Moni island beyond. Lots of charter yachts make Perdika their first or last day destination. Especially on the weekends, Perdika is very lively, mostly with Greek weekend tourists. RELIGION - CHURCHES AND MONASTERIES

Aegina island has a great religious tradition, both obvious and hidden, expressed in a special, continuous way from the ancient years until today. The way myths and saints have related to each other is admirable and the saints that Aegina has generated are many, as are the myths that could be told this island. There are ELEVEN SAINTS associated with Aegina ( who were born, lived or died IN THE ISLAND ) namely : Saint Nektarios of Aegina, Saint Crispus the Apostle, Saint Leontios the Great Martyr, Saint Julius and Julian, Venerable Athanasia the Wonderworker, Venerable Luke of Steiris, Saint Dionysios of Zakynthos, Saint Savvas of Kalymnos, Saint Theodora of Aegina and her daughterTheopisti. On July 30th the eleven Saints associated with the Greek island of Aeging are commemorated together. The celebration of this feast takes place in the CHURCH OF THE SAINTS OF AEGINA which is in Livadi, often confused as the CHURCH OF SAINT THOMAS, which is wrong, because the adjacent chapel located in the courtyard of the church is alone dedicated to SAINT THOMAS.
One of the most visited on sites on Aegina is the church of miracle healer Agios Nektarios and the monastery of Agia Triada (The Holy Trinity) that is located on a higher level overlooking the church. (there is also reference in our sightseeing chapter)

On the steep hill adjacent to the church and monastery of Agios Nektarios is located Aegina's version of Mystras - Paleachora, which means literally, "Old Town" and which was for a millennium (9th century - early 19th century AD ) the island capital. The setting itself is magnificent, especially in spring , when all vegetation is a brilliant green both on the hill and in the valley below, seen in panoramic splendor from high above. All that remains of this hill village with its castle are its churches, rumored to number 365 - one for every day of the year - though this figure is unsupported by research. Of the 70 churches whose existence on the hill are confirmed, 33 churches remain and are open to visitors. Five have been restored and are in good condition, though most remain in great need of restoration. IN THE GUEST HOUSE there is a guide book about PALEOCHORE with paintings and photographs of the churches. Text and notes are in both Greek and English.

The church of Faneromeni is located on the new road towards Agia Marina (Faneromeni str) 1 km from the port of Aegina and is part of the outlying property of Panagia Chrysoleontissa. It is located in a catacomb, while there are many legends and beliefs concerning the church and the icon of the Virgin Mary that it holds. It dates back to the 13th century and consists of three different churches. The central external one is abandoned but two smaller churches are hidden under the so-called ''CATACOMB'' . For those who do not know the CATACOMBS are defined as the cave structures of the Christians who chipped the rocks below the surface of the earth, opened underground corridors and hiding places and built temples, tombs and crypts. The underground area referred to by many as a ''catacomb'' consists of two chambers. One is dedicated to the Aeginean Agia Athanasia and the other to the Virgin Mary. The valuable icon of the Virgin Mary located in the church, which was built in the 17th century, shows her in prayer.

OR OMORFI EKKLISIA - BEAUTIFUL CHURCH This Byzantine church is dedicated to the Saints Theodoroi Omorfi Ekklisia is an aisleless barrel-vaulted church made of large dressed square blocks of poros stones of uniform size. The podium around the building, the dressed masonry, and the simple but unusual two-light window in the sanctuary, show that the church was built in the late twelfth century, just before the Frankish conquest. The inscription carved in a poros block in the west facade refers to the fact that a renovation of the church took place in 1289. The inscription refers to the Byzantine emperor Andronikos 1 even though at this time the island was under Latin rule. The interior of the church is lavishly decorated with wall paintings, it is worth noting that here in the Nativity above the vault is one of the very few depictions of the Panagia Galaktotrophousa (the Virgin Breastfeeding) in Byzantine art, this is set in a cave, the edges of which incorporate birds eyes. LOCATION: Kipseli north of Aegina town - between Agii Asomati & Kipseli.

THE PRESENTATION OF THE VIRGIN - (PANAGITSA) Panagitsa of Aegina is a church from which you will definitely pass by, more than once, during your walks in Aegina. It is a basilica, with a large dome and vaulted arches located on the coastal road of the city of Aegina. Panagitsa was built in 1906 in the place of an older small church of 1673 which was granted, in 1826, by the government to refugees who had found shelter on the island.

The church of Agios Nikolaos is one of the first images you behold when you arrive by boat to the island of Aegina. It is located at the port , built in the 17th century in stone and thus, dressed in white, it enjoys the company of the boats and other moored vessels. It stands out for its simple architecture with its austere, clear lines, small size and the frescoes in its interior.

THE CATHEDRAL (METROPOLIS) OF AEGINA From afar and even as the ship approaches the port of Aegina, you can see the two towering bell towers with the clock, its trademark. It is the first Cathedral of Free Greece, three-aisled with three red domes. It is a church dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, to Agios Dionysios of Aegina hailing from Zakynthos and Agios Ioannis Theologos. The Metropolitan church of Aegina was built in 1806 with funds from the Holy Monastery of Chrysoleontissa. It was the meeting place of the elected assembly of the Elders and for a short time covered the needs of the interdisciplinary School. In the the Metropolitan church, the Aegineans welcomed the governor Capodistrias on January 11, 1828, and a few days later, on 28 January, Kapodistrias; inauguration ceremony was held as the first Governor of the Greek State and the Panhellenic Council that constituted the interim Governmental committee. A visit there will take you back to history, both because of its characteristic architecture and because it is located in the same place as the Eynardios Teaching School and the Municipal Theater, two other characteristic historic buildings of Aegina. Feel like living in the 1800's , when Aegina was the first capital of the modern Greek state, and do not omit to see the wooden pew of Governor Ioannis Capodistrias, which is still preserved across the Despotic Throne.

One of Aegina's best - kept secrets is this beautiful early 17th century fortified monastery which sits off in the hills of central Aegina on a high plateau, quits by itself within the bosom of nature, inhabited by only nine nuns and quite a few animals. A 30/45 min walk up a long road that starts across from the better known (and far more frequented) Church and Monastery of Agios Nektarios. Panagia Chrysoleontissa was built in the 17th century and is one of the old monasteries of Aegina. It was formerly in the Kypseli area in Leonti, until the monks transferred the icon of Virgin Mary to the present location, deep in the mountains, in order to protect it from the pirates. The purpose for which it was built was therefore to provide a safe place for the protection of the monks from pirates. Consequently, its architecture is very special, with characteristically high walls and a three-storey tower. The tower, 20 meters high, was built long before the church, around 1600, while the church was built in 1800 to replace the previous one that had been burned completely. During the 19th century most monastic estates were expropriated - this particular monastery was always very rich in land property - and the monks left. Since 1935 Chrysoleontissa switched from male to female Monastery and now there are about 10 nuns living there. The monastery is known for its ornate carved icon screen and its beautiful frescoes as well as for the icon of Virgin Mary of Chrysoleontissa. Every August 15th the biggest festival of the island of Aegina takes place here. It features huge garden at its center. Its contribution was very important in the Revolutionary effort of 1821, both in terms of spiritual and financial support.

This monastery lies south-west of the Afea Temple, on a beautiful spot surrounded by pine trees. It is a women's monastery since 1956. The monastery impressed the visitor with the nun's industriousness, its organisation but also the spirituality which is obvious during the mass with the melodic voices of the nuns who chant and every other church gathering.
