Food scene

Old school rural New Mexico ambiance. Try the amazing Huevos Rancheros with a slab of bacon for Sunday brunch or after a morning walk down the nearby Pecos Historic Park paths - either the Ancestral Trail or the South Pasture trail. The rest of the menu offers average NM fare.

Wait a minute, there's a gas station where Pancho's is suppose to be!? Yep, that's right. Pancho's is a basically a huge grill set up in the back of a tiny gas station that serves, hot, New Mexican food to go. Grab a burrito for a picnic next to the river for a change of pace. Call ahead to order to avoid a wait, you never know when the whole fire department will place an order ahead of you.

Just 15 minutes down the road on the way to Santa Fe or Eldorado and the Galisteo Basin. Healthy New Mexican offerings including an amazing breakfast burrito as well as pastries and confections, great coffee and a pleasant atmosphere. The food here is healthy, deliciously tasty and overall healthy and locally sourced. It gets its name from the business that originally used the building, a gas station called the Fina Station. Lotsa locals here! Breakfast and lunch only.

Great atmosphere, varied menu (something for everyone), cozy in the winter, ask to sit in the back garden in the summer. Huge local favorite. Only 20 minutes away, just as you reach Santa Fe. Breakfast, lunch and dinner all delish.

A genuine olde tyme saloon, just like you imagine and still a thrill. Only open certain days, stop in for a drink or a meal. I’ve heard better breakfast reviews than dinner reviews though. We’ll worth it just for the ambiance and one of their signature cocktails or a cold beer after a hike. Great place to visit after taking in the nearby Cowboy Shack hike at the Galisteo Basin.

One of my go to places in Santa Fe. It has a great selection of healthy foods from various countries, as well as the NM faves you might be looking for. You order at the counter. Outdoor and indoor seating. Definitely a local hangout. It’s cash or check only. No cc cards. There’s an atm in the gas station across the street.

Beautiful location overlooking the Railyard in Santa Fe with the added bonus of being an intriguing plant store as well. Go during the Saturday morning Santa Fe Farmers Market, or at a less crowded time. You’ll have to pay for parking and if you can’t find a street spot there’s an underground garage. As long as you’re parked, check out nearby REI and The Blue Rain gallery for an eye popping treat of Native American art.

You are staying at the foot of the Pecos Wilderness, check out these trails and trail maps to find gorgeous mountain hikes that match your level and interest. Check out the Santa Fe Area Hiking Trails book on the book shelf :). I also recommend downloading the All Trails app. There are also spots along the road up the Pecos Canyon to pull over and stick your feet in the river if you’re hankering for the sound and feel of cold mountain water.

A vast network of mountain biking and hiking trails five minutes away. Park at the old church by the Glorieta/Pecos onramp to I25 and find the trailheads that will lead you up and down and up and down the mountain ranges you see from the north deck of the Airbnb. Open for hiking, big with the local and not so local mountain bike crowd. The Dalton Canyon Day Use area is just six miles into the mountains from the only intersection in Pecos. Put it in your gps or track the miles because there is just a small sign on the L. to indicate the entrance into this well kept secret. Or go just a little farther up the road and access a swath of river front on your R. You can order ahead and pick up a freshly made burrito at Pancho's to enjoy at the picnic tables at the first entry. Then follow the trail by the river and you'll find some nice places to wade in. Beautiful scenery all along the river.

Ten minutes away, this small historical park is unique in that you can enter "kivas", underground spaces sacred to the native tribes that once inhabited the area. These are dotted amid the ruins of a monolithic cathedral ruin and the stone foundations of the village that surrounded it. A gift shop and small educational center with a brief historic film are at the base of the easy and pretty trail that lead to the ruins. Don't expect a whole lot, and you will be quite pleased with the small treasures it offers. Check out the calendar section of their website for weekend activities like special hikes or drum making demonstrations.

This business opened recently and takes guests in an old, remodeled train from Santa Fe to Lamy while offering various entertainment on the ride. They stop at The Legal Tender, a saloon in Lamy before heading back.
