Recommendations for the Area - Parking, Night Life, Restaurants, Architecture, and More!
South Beach is located from 5th Street to 23rd Street. Popular locations are the News Cafe, the Versace Mansion, and the Victor. A major drawback is parking. Street parking is nearly impossible and the only options are either paying $15 - $30 for valet hotel parking or the Public Parking Garage on the corner of 16th street and Drexel. Our tip is; don't rent a car; try Uber or a CitiBike to get around. Lincoln Road is a must-see pedestrian center which features designer stores, delicious restaurants, and incredible architecture.

Buzzy, high-end shopping and rooftop gardens. This 18 square block district used to be a pineapple plantation. In 1922, the "Pineapple King", Timothy Moore, transformed farmland Buena Vista East with a furniture store - The Moore Building. This became the center of the Design District. This is one of my personal recommendations as every store; from Louis Vuitton to Tom Ford have their own unique exterior building design created by their top designers. MC Kitchen and Michael's Genuine Food and Drink are my personal favorites.

Wynwood is an artistic hub and has spectacular museums. Wynwood was once a bleak industrial area with galleries, museums, and artist's studios. On Second Saturdays, galleries stay open late and crack open the wine, although this attracts more freeloaders than buyers. The entire area now boasts city-approved graffiti art on EVERY building in the Wynwood area. The Rubell Family Collection and the Margulies Colllection are two of the remaining private museums which feature works from artists like Andy Warhol and more. Uber is definitely recommended if you are traveling around Wynwood.

Brickell is the Financial Heart of Miami and is home to a number of glamorous hotels. Brickell is located South of the Miami River, on a farm once owned by Mary Brickell - who build Brickell Avenue and after whom the district is named. Here, you will see the rare sight of a Miami local wearing a suit. Some iconic hotels to visit are the Icon Brickell condo-hotel and the W Miami. They were the first two to bring glamour to the city. For restaurants I recommend Komodo which is reservation-only and Nusr-Et which is also reservation-only. Beware, they are ridiculously overpriced but incredibly delicious!

The South Pointe/SoFi/South of Fifth neighborhood has many names and abbreviations. It is undisputedly the epitome of high-end living. The South of Fifth neighborhood offers a quieter, safer, and classier place for tourists to relax as opposed to tourists who opt to stay on Ocean Drive. At the southernmost tip of Miami Beach, there is a park on Government Cut, which is ideal for watching cruise ships depart on Sundays. Excellent restaurants such as Prime One Twelve, Trattoria La Buffala, and Burgermeister are hidden gems that are tucked away in the SoFi neighborhood.

“Lincoln Road is a world-famous shopping street in South beach with more than 200 retailers, designer brands, boutiques, art galleries & restaurants. I would recommend taking a cab here as finding parking is near impossible!”

Getting Around Without a Car

TAXI or Lyft and Uber Taxis in Miami and Miami Beach have meter fares and flat fares. There is no charge for baggage, but they do expect a small tip if they handle it. The meter charges $2.50 for the first sixth of a mile and $0.40 for waiting time. Some taxis have credit and debit card readers, for an additional charge. Uber and Lyft are available everywhere in Miami Beach and I highly recommend it over the Taxi. The fare of Uber and Lyft is about half of what a taxi fare is and the waiting time is significantly less, depending on the time of day.

Car Rentals

Renting a car is recommended for travelers with ambitious plans to explore the whole area. Otherwise, for those headed to South Beach, a car is typically not necessary. Rental cars are available in Miami Beach. US Citizens renting a car must have a verifiable proof of insurance to opt out of collision insurance. Visitors with foreign licenses must buy collision insurance. Hertz, Miami Beach: 1 week rental, $110 - $518, depending on car model Avis, Miami: 1 week, $130 to $500 depending on the model; super luxury signature cars are around $1,000 Sixt: $100 to $800, 1 week, depends on model.
