Things to Do in Fredericksburg

The Texas Hill Country

Fredericksburg was founded in 1846 by German immigrants. In fact, German was still spoken in town until the 1970s. Now, it has become known as a premier wine region, promoting Texas wines and wineries. The area features up to 70 wineries and tasting rooms. About 10 miles outside of town, you'll find Luckenbach, which became famous from the Waylon Jennings song and still hosts musicians today. For those that enjoy the outdoors, you have easy access to Enchanted Rock State Park and Old Tunnel State Park where the bats come out of an old railroad tunnel every evening at dusk. For folks that enjoy history, Fredericksburg is also the home of the Nimitz Museum of the Pacific, which focuses on the war in the Pacific during WW II. Admiral Nimitz was a native of Fredericksburg. And of course, Fredericksburg has many exceptional restaurants and shops, and mouth watering peaches from May - September.

Luckenbach is famous from the Waylon Jennings song. There's not much left in the way of a town here anymore, but you can stop in anytime for a beer and sit outside and listen to the guitar pickers sing their songs under the old oak trees.

Peaches and More!

This is my go to for peaches! Peaches are available from May - September. This produce stand also offers fresh tomatoes, melons, summer squash, fresh beans and other goodies throughout the summer. They can tell you where everything came from and sometimes when it was picked. They also sell peach ice cream.

If you like bold red wines, this winery is a must. The winemaker Dan is passionate about wines and wine making and it shows. This winery notes the yield per acre for each of their wines, something that few other wineries do. The vines are trimmed so that each vine produces fewer grapes with more concentrated flavors.

This lovely park runs along the Live Oak Creek and includes plenty of shady picnic areas. I love the nature trail that features a bird viewing area and a butterfly garden. I have seen spotted deer, armadillos, and rabbits along the trail. This is a great place to take a morning walk/hike.

There's a new restaurant in town and it's very good! Hill & Vine features Texas specialties from tender cuts to queso to fresh fish. I had the fish tacos and they were excellent. They also have a wine list offering a selection of Texas wines, as well as wines from further afield. Check out the patio in the evenings and order drinks from Das Bar Bus, a converted 1974 VW bus that has a new life as a traveling bar.

Wine Buying Tip

The HEB grocery store in Fredericksburg has a good selection of Texas wines, and they tend to be cheaper than purchasing them directly from the wineries. Plus, you get an extra 10% off when you buy 6 or more.
