The Lakes has a lot of high price upmarket restaurants and many of them are excellent. This one is special because the food is fantastic and the bill is reasonable considering how good the cooking is. The restaurant is in the building that housed the official stamp distribution office that the poet William Wordsworth ran.

Wonderful, unusual crispy pizzas, decent coffee, huge slices of cake, very very popular and you can’t book so just turn up and queue. It’s well worth it.

Great vegetarian food, flatbreads, cakes, drinks, coffee. Hugely popular in a lovely site overlooking the river. Well priced. This place also has a hiker’s cafe for good food on the hoof and a shop selling upmarket, well, tat.

This is the dream cafe you always hope to find in the countryside - excellent home baking, good coffee right in the centre of the historic Grasmere village a stone’s throw from Dove Cottage.

A genuine independent bookshop with an ever changing stock. The proprietor Catherine makes sure she has the best local books, up to date fiction, walking books, greetings cards and there’s a decent cafe in the back.

A very unusual thing - an international standard commercial gallery selling some of the very best art and crafts on the market. You will see works by established and new artists that the owners also sell online and at exhibitions in London .

The best example of an Arts and Crafts era house in the Lake District. And once you tire of touring the beautiful interior there is an excellent cafe.

Possibly the most beautiful valley in the Lake District. There is a lovely four mile walk around the perimeter which at one point travels through a tunnel cut through the rock face. Try Syke Farm Cafe at the end. They make their own ice cream with milk donated by their cows.

Crummock is on the end of Buttermere, but it is twice as big. It is difficult to decide which is the more beautiful lake. It’s nine miles around Crummock, so you will need plenty of sandwiches and a hot drink. Half way around you can divert to Buttermere for lunch at Syke Farm Cafe.

Loweswater has a different, even more remote vibe than Buttermere or Crummock. On one side you walk through a wood that was literally designed by William Wordsworth. On the other side there is a quiet road you can walk along. But the real walkers take the route over Holme Wood which has lovely views.

It’s a really good idea to visit Wordsworth House and Garden, not just because it is the birthplace of the poet but also because the heritage garden at the back by the river is fascinating. The volunteers in each room are very knowledgeable about the family history - and naturally there is a great cafe selling cakes baked in Cockermouth.

It might seem like a cliche, but Wordsworth’s first home as an adult in the Lake District is one of the best run and most authentic museums in the country. It is hard to believe that some of the best poetry ever written was produced in a smoky, smelly, damp, cold and crowded former pub.

If you have toured Wordsworth House in Cockermouth and Dove Cottage in Grasmere you may as well collect the set. Rydal Mount was a real step up from Dove Cottage, paid for from Wordsworth’s earnings from acting as a civil servant distributing Government stamps. He created a lovely garden with looping paths that he pounded along while creating the poetry, which by the time he moved here was not very good.

Neighbourhoods

With its very pretty Moot Hall, Keswick is the alternative shopping hub for the North Lakes after Cockermouth. It is especially devoted to the needs of the hiker and climber so you can buy every kind of boot and waterproof here. Also packed with restaurants and cafes, and it boasts an excellent branch of the upmarket Booths supermarket (a kind of Northern Waitrose).
