There is an easy round walk from the cottage that takes you to this stunning waterfall. Heading out of the cottage, turn left onto Blue Hill Road and continue up the lane onto the footpath leading up the hill. The track takes you above Ambleside and offers beautiful views of the village. Keep going until you get to a gate straight ahead of you with a stone staircase, which leads to the top of Wansfell, on your right. Go through the gate and turn left down the hill towards the village onto Stockgyll Road. There is a narrow path on your right, keep a look out as it’s easily missed, which takes you through a wrought iron turnstile and into Stockgyll park, carry on and you will come to the waterfall. ~From here you can walk down through the park to the village and back to the cottage . The round walk takes around 30-40 minutes.

This is another walk straight from the cottage, an relatively easy walk with great views over Windermere. Walking from the cottage go into the village and take the right hand road at the side of the Post Office/Tourist Information Centre, past Freddie Garside Butchers – award winning Cumberland sausages – at the end of the road turn right and then turn left and keep going up the hill, past the houses, through a gate and onto a path that leads you to Sweden Bridge ( see the photo in the sitting room). To return to Ambleside go over the bridge, up the hill to your left and you’ll see a path to your left which will take you back down to Ambleside, taking in the lovely views of Windermere. The walk takes around two hours.

A not too demanding walk is to the top of Loughrigg, the nearest hill you can see from the cottage. Walk into the village and down to St. Mary’s Church, (lovely service on a Sunday at 11am) through the church grounds and left through the park, over the bridge and turn right. Cross over a cattle grid and look out for a footpath on your left which takes you up a tarmac lane. Follow the lane, round a bend past a couple of cottages, on the next bend look out for a footpath over a stone style on your left. Go over the style and follow the path to your right to get to the top. From the top of the rocky outcrop, with Windermere in front of you bear right, scramble down the rocks and follow a path that will take you to a bench by a wall. From here there is a path going down the hill towards Windermere which brings you out on the main road at Clappersgate, a short walk from Ambleside village.

Excellent food, locally produced. A bit pricey but worth it. The team are immensely proud of their produce and even go foraging for local herbs and plants.
