The Caribou-Targhee National Forest occupies over 3 million acres and stretches across southeastern Idaho, from the Montana, Utah, and Wyoming borders. This Forest is also home to the Curlew National Grassland. The spectacular scenery of the Forest is easily reached from highways, byways and back doors. The bond between forest and community spans generations through family activities such as camping, hiking, hunting, fishing and riding off-highway vehicles. During the winter, the forest offers vast expanses of untracked powder. The 123,451-acre Jedediah Smith Wilderness was designated in October 1984 because of its unique karst limestone geology. It lies on the west slop of the Teton Range, adjacent to Grand Teton National Park and sports amazing views. This area is heavily used so its critical that individuals adhere to leave no trace principles and plan a head before they hit the trails. The Wilderness Act allows for hiking, camping, hunting, fishing, skiing and grazing. Campfires are allowed in most areas but some are closed to open fires to protect resources and the limited number of trees in the aera. Mechanical transport (bicycles) and motorized equipment is prohibited year-round. Horses can be used, however overnight camping with stock is only allowed in specific locations. Contact the Teton Basin Ranger District to learn more

The Ice Caves https://www.rexburgonline.com/things-to-do/ice-caves/ The Ice Caves are a fantastic way to spend time during the hot summers. Originally lava tubes, the caves have developed year-round ice. It is suggested to wear a jacket, warm clothes and shoes with traction that keep feet warm, after all – you will be traversing on ice! Caves are dark – and you should bring a bright flashlight to help navigate. The roads are amazingly rough, requiring good clearance to make it to the cave which is a large hole in the ground (similar to the civil defense caves). When traveling, you will need to have the directions pre-downloaded. Because of lack of cellular service, you won’t be able to look up any fine details. Be aware of the weather. Because of the long drive on the dirt road, you wouldn’t want to get stuck in a storm, making the road into mud. The Ice Caves are a worthy destination, as is the surrounding terrain. The area has plenty of collapsed lava-tubes which make for fun scrambling. This cave isn’t for those who struggle with claustrophobia. There are small and tight spaces. When exploring the cave, I found that wearing gloves was a great suggestion – as some of the ice is very rough. The cave also might be frozen or flooded during certain times of the year. Features: Icey walls surrounding the Cave Ice is between 3 to 6 ft. thick A few hundred yards deep Tips For Visiting the Ice Caves: Bring a Jacket Wear gloves Wear shoes with traction Bring a Flashlight If you are claustrophobic do not visit Prepare to get wet Plan to spend 2 to 3 hours round trip plus visiting Directions From Rexburg: Head north of town on 2nd East like you are going to the Sand Dunes. After passing through sand-dunes, you will continue your drive until you cross over 2 cattle guards and see a sign that says “Entering Clark County” on the right-hand side of the road. There are two turnoffs that you can take, that connect to each other. One heads northeast, and 200 yards down the road, is a second one that is parallel to the road. Take either one of these dirt roads that head northeast for 3.3 miles. It’s recommended to have 4-wheel drive. The terrain is very bumpy. You will need to drive very slow as the county does not upkeep this road. Drive until you arrive at a fork in the road, take the right fork. Be careful of large pots in the ground. At the end of this small road is a lot that many people have parked in. In front is the large Chasm, which is where the ice-cave is located. There will be a small hole on the southern side that you will cross through to get into the large hole that houses the cave entrance. The Ice Cave entrance is the lower of the two pockets, and should quickly have ice formed at the entrance. Sometimes of year the ice is melted more than others. JOHNNY SACK CABIN (208) 624-7266 https://www.co.fremont.id.us//departments/parks_rec/big_springs/johnny-sack_big-springs.html In 1929, Johnny Sack leased a small tract of land from the United States Forest Service and began building his log cabin at Big Springs. Little did Johnny know when he first acquired the choice building site, his home would become a landmark one day discussed in the United States Congress. Due to its unique location and picturesque setting, Johnny’s cabin and nearby water-wheel have long been one of the most photographed sites in Island Park. The cabin attracts thousands of visitors each summer interested in the log and stone structure as well as the building’s colorful creator. Cabin Interior - Wood work The cabin is open to the public from mid-June through mid-September, and visitors are invited to visit and see firsthand the unique craftsmanship of one of Island Park’s early settlers. One of Johnny’s trademarks is the split bark decoration used in the cabin’s furniture and interior. He took great pride in detail work. One ceiling lamp, still hanging in its original location, contains seventy-two individual handcrafted pieces of wood. A double bed was made of ninety-six wood pieces which Johnny nailed and glued together. Today many of the individually crafted pieces of wood furniture Johnny created for his home remain in their original location. Water Wheel The cabin took approximately three years to complete, as Johnny worked primarily with hand tools — saws, draw knives, scrapers and planers. Johnny built a small structure and water-wheel at the edge of the springs to harness the power of the springs and create electricity. The cabin became part of the National Register of Historic Places in 1979 and is the property of the USFS. Since 1969 Grand Targhee has been the home of skiing on the west side of the Tetons. With consistent snowfall, wide-open terrain, and breathtaking views it has remained a staple of the area since its opening. While we’ve seen a few changes over the years and have more on the way, the Targhee vibe is still alive and well. Since the lifts started spinning we’ve embraced being laid back and keeping it simple. We were built for skiers and we’ve tried to keep it that way.

St. Anthony Sand Dunes The St. Anthony Sand Dunes consists of 10,600 acres of clear, shifting, white quartz sand. Although much of the sand dunes is managed as a wilderness study area, the area is popular for high off-road vehicle use. Dunes up to 400 feet high attract riders from throughout the west. ORV users are strongly encouraged to avoid damage to vegetation and impacts to wildlife so that use of this unique area may continue. Others prefer to explore the dunes on horse and on foot. At Egin Lakes Campground, 26 of the 48 campsites are available to reserve on recreation.gov. The remaining 22 sites are first come, first served. View the campground map here. Closure Information: The riding area on the west side of St. Anthony Sand Dunes, west of Egin Lakes Campground (aka. "the big dunes") are closed from January 1 through sunrise on April 1. The area south of Egin - Hamer Rd is also closed from January 1 through sunrise April 1. The areas completely surrounding the the open sand of the St. Anthony Sand Dunes are closed from January 1 through sunrise on May 1. The smaller dunes, east of Egin Lakes Campground to Red Road are open year-round, but are usually covered in snow by January 1.

https://parksandrecreation.idaho.gov/parks/ashton-to-tetonia-trail/ About the Park The Ashton-Tetonia Trail opened to the public in 2010 and is administered by the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation and managed through Harriman State Park. This 29.6 mile trail follows the abandoned railroad grade of the Teton Valley Branch of the Union Pacific Railroad from Ashton to Tetonia. Built in 1912, the Oregon Short Line Railroad, a subsidiary of the Union Pacific Railroad, connected the communities of Ashton, Idaho, through Drummond, Lamont, Tetonia, Driggs, and Victor. The railroad brought prosperity to the sparsely populated Teton Valley; it connected formerly isolated communities and commerce, and moved important agricultural freight, such as livestock, seed potatoes, peas, and grain. Though heavy snowfall often closed the line for days at a time, the railroad was essential transportation in Teton Valley. For many years, passenger trains ran to and from Victor each day, with connections in Ashton and Idaho Falls for West Yellowstone, Pocatello, and Salt Lake City. The Oregon Short Line was also the best route to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks, carrying visitors to the dude ranches of Jackson Hole. Improvements to State Highways 32 and 33 caused a significant decline in rail use in the 1960’s. Fewer people traveled by passenger train, and much of the freight began to be transported by trucks. The line was abandoned from Tetonia to Victor in 1981, and from Ashton to Tetonia in 1984. The trail winds through small riparian areas and stands of aspen trees, and over three historic trestle bridges. Just west of the Teton Range, the Ashton-Tetonia Trail once again connects people and places, the past and future. Completed in 2010 under the Rails to Trails Conservancy program, the abandoned rail was transformed into a vibrant public space managed by the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation. The 29.6-mile trail features riding through a pristine and secluded environment that hearkens back to simpler times. Today, visitors will enjoy the beautiful farm country of eastern Idaho, 3 bridge crossings, and unsurpassed views of the Teton Mountains. The historic train trestles at Fall River, Conant Creek, and Bitch Creek span 600’ in length and 130’ in height, and are popular landmarks along the trail. Visitors can experience the trail by hiking, biking, horseback riding, as well as Nordic skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling in winter. The trail is packed gravel/dirt, so mountain bikes (or bikes with tires at least 32mm wide) are recommended. Road bikes are not appropriate.
