the place of Murter at the foot of Gradina hill already in the 1st century. The Romans built the small town of Collentum, which served as a resting place for Roman legionnaires. Murter has been known since the 13th century. when it was called Veliko Selo and Srimač (Srimac), and since 1715 it has had its current name.
For a long time, it was thought that his name had something to do with death, but Murter most likely got his name from the hollowed-out stone trough that was part of the oil press, and it was called - mortarium. This origin of the name also points to the long tradition of olive growing in this region. Murter oil is widely known.
