Neighborhoods

General description of the Bernal Heights residential neighborhood in San Francisco.
Bernal Heights is a residential neighborhood located in the southeastern area of San Francisco. It is 3 miles from downtown SF with easy access to both the 101 and 280 freeways. The Muni bus #67 runs through Bernal Heights offering direct access to the 24th and Mission BART (subway station). The neighborhood is hilly but extremely walk-able with many coffee shops , bars, restaurants, retail stores and a brewery on the neighborhood's main commercial street Cortland Avenue. The neighborhood circles towering Bernal Hill, a public park closed to automobiles with 360 degree vistas of all of San Francisco including downtown, the bay, and the Golden Gate and Bay Bridges. (Up top near the transmission tower is a tree swing--a great photo opportunity to catch yourself flying over the downtown vista.) The park is a great place to jog or walk and is a favorite of dog walkers. At sunrise and sunset you may even see the 2 resident coyotes (please do not feed them).

Consejos para la ciudad

Cómo moverse

We highly recommend taking public transportation.

Parking is difficult all over the City but especially downtown. We recommend taking public transportation. The Bernal Heights bus (#67) ($3.00) will take you to the Mission District which is bustling with shops, trendy neighborhood restaurants, and which still has a distinctly Latinx flavor (and GREAT burritos). The 24th and Mission BART (subway) station will have you in the middle of downtown in 10 minutes where you can walk anywhere or hop on the old fashioned "F" trolly car to go to Pier 39 and Fisherman's Wharf. Get off BART at Powell Street station to catch a cable car.

Trips to ALCATRAZ

The trip to Alcatraz is well worth it--but you must book in advance as it often sells out. Make sure to pay for the audio tour: it is extremely well done and enhances the experience. The ferry ride is short but fun and offers spectacular views especially on a sunny day!
Qué empacar

Bring warm clothes not just shorts!

Yes this is California but San Francisco is surrounded by the Pacific Ocean on the West and the SF Bay on the North and East so it can be foggy and breezy, especially in the middle of summer. We also have beautiful hot sunny days, so pack with layers --just don't forget a warm jacket and sweatshirt.

Our homeless population

San Francisco offers more social services for the homeless than most other cities, but the sheer numbers of homeless individuals and families leaves many on the streets. No neighborhood is immune; however, the downtown area and it's immediate surrounds are the most heavily impacted. It is a fact of City life which the SF government is struggling to improve on a daily basis. These are rarely dangerous situations-just be aware of your surroundings when you are walking around

COVID-19

We are following STRICT COVID-19 guidelines. San Francisco may require masks inside certain types of establishments and may require proof of vaccination. Many of the pages in our guidebook may not be relevant during this time due to closures and public transportation changes.
