This area has been developed into The Wharf: it's got tons of upscale restaurants and shops, it's located on the riverfront, and often hosts free outdoor concerts and other events. The restaurants are a bit pricey, so we like to stroll around for the views of the river and then go elsewhere to eat.

To be honest, Chinatown is not worth visiting unless you have your heart set on a specific restaurant. There are only a few authentic Chinese restaurants, the rest are big national chains or very expensive high-end places (think of Starbucks with their sign translated into Chinese characters). And there's ALWAYS a ton of people and foot traffic.

Outdoor activities

Rock Creek Park is a quiet outdoor oasis smack in the center of DC! The park is HUGE with many trails (both paved and unpaved trails). The park is also home to a planetarium, a nature center, and an old mill house. They also close sections of the roads to cars on Saturdays and Sundays for bicyclists and pedestrians to enjoy.
