Food, groceries and beverages within walking distance.

Everything you need within walking distance. Foster Road is in the newly trendy Foster Powell district, with lots of fantastic places to dine or pick up a few beer or cocktails for a nightcap before coming home.
Bar Carlo has great food from breakfast to small plates at dinner, including an extensive vegan menu, a full bar, and the other half of the space has a record store, a indoor plant store, and vintage goods. There has been many a time I bought a few albums while waiting for my delicious food to arrive. The owners of Bar Carlo also go out their way to foster other community gatherings like craft nights, watch parties, for favorite tv shows, hosting local filmmakers, or the odd music performance. As it says on the wall "Foster is a verb"!

What can I say about Henry Higgins except that they have the best bagels in town! Traditional boiled bagels with lots of different kinds of homemade spread, lox, and sandwich fixings to choose from. Good coffee and tea, and local art on the walls from Chris Haberman/Poboy Art which is cash and carry. 'Enry 'Iggins - just you wait! (any "My Fair Lady" fans?).

Public Gardens, parks, and walking trails.

The Rhododhendron gardens is beautifully landscaped and tranquil, and so pleasant to walk in any time of the year. There is excellent bird watching too, with ducks, geese, green herons, cormorants, red wing blackbirds, and the occasional water borne nutria and friendly squirrels. This is one of my favorite parks to come to when I don't want a huge hike, and need the tranquility of trees and water and wildlife. The garden is particularly spectacular in May when the rhododendrons are in full bloom, and in fall.

Mt. Tabor Park has nice walking trails, and a great view of the city. Famous because of its reservoirs, Mt. Tabor draws people in every weather to walk the loop around the top, meander through forest trails, or visit the dog off-leash area. This is also a favorite spot to watch the 4th of July fireworks blossoming over downtown, and of course hosts the infamous adult soap box derby. The park has a lovely playground for families, and a large covered picnic area, so it is accessible and enjoyable any time of the year.

Powell Butte is a nature preserve on top of a natural outcrop from which you can see Mt. Hood and multiple other peaks in the distance. As you walk the trails you pass through meadows, established oak glens, old apple orchards, and a dark green forest of ferns and doug firs. The bird and wildlife watching is incredible as are the views. There are a few picnic spots just by the parking lot where you can see the mountains and the happy hikers coming down. The park also has a few dedicated horse and mountain bike trails, and lots of people bring their dogs for a nice walk. As you ascend the path (or ride the shuttle) to the gates of the Portland Japanese Garden, you are transported into another world. Slowly, the clutter and hum of the day fall away as you walk amongst carefully tended moss and ferns and trees. Passing the gates, you can choose meandering pathways that take you to several distinct gardens, each with their own aesthetic. Water gardens with blooming iris and koi and a waterfall, sweet little rivulets winding through rocks and shrubs, classic raked white rock gardens swirling around heavy stones, or surrounding blooming cherry trees and azaleas, the many colors and textures of bright maples throughout the season. No matter when you come, it is always beautiful, and always breathtaking. The garden also has examples of classic Japanese architecture, and if you are lucky, you may get to witness a tea ceremony, or come on a day with one of their many cultural offerings.

No trip to Portland is complete without a pilgrimage to Powells City of Books. Powells claims to be the largest independent new and used bookstore in the world, and I can believe it. I used to dream about living here. Powells has new, used, rare, underground, and out-of-print books. They have a great coffee shop where you can peruse your purchases before you buy. I gotta be honest, the comic book section and underground literature section was one of the main reasons why I decided to move to Portland. Oh, they have all the normal stuff too, just ask one of your friendly book guides. If you are an avid reader, this place is like Mecca!
