The Clerigos Tower is one of the paradigmatic architectural landmarks of Porto. The structure is, in fact, part of the Clerigos Church, representing its bell tower. The church proper was built between 1732 and 1750, but the construction works at the Clerigos Tower started no sooner than 1754, only to be completed in 1763. It was designed by Nicolau Nasoni, the Italian architect who left a strong artistic print on Porto since he also contributed, at least in part, to the design of sundry other landmarks of the city, such as the Porto Cathedral, the Church of Mercy and the very Clerigos Church. The Clerigos Tower of Porto At the moment of its construction, the Clerigos Tower was the tallest building in Portugal. Thus, it amounts to some 76 meters in height, counting about 230 steps visitors can use in order to climb the six levels of the structure in order to get to the belfry and admire the view of Porto. In fact, the main tourist merit of the tower resides precisely in the panoramic views it provides over the city. However, visitors can also direct their attention to the architectural merits of the structure. It is an example of the Baroque style blending mild influences of the Tuscan bell towers that must have inspired Nasoni when he designed the Portuguese campanile.

Why are we directing you to a train station? Because it's one of the world's most stunning. We're not being biased either, as São Bento was voted tenth most beautiful in Travel+Leisure magazine's list of the World's Most Beautiful Train Stations. First, take in the Belle Epoque, Parisian-esque exterior, then prepare to have your mind just a little bit blown upon entering. The concourse is jaw-droppingly wonderful, with 20,000 decorative tiles covering the walls, which took painter Jorge Colaço 11 years to complete, no less.

When Googling this park, if you’re faced with a bunch of fiberglass dinosaurs, then you’re in the wrong Crystal Palace. Despite the lack of prehistoric models, these gardens are somewhat more exotic than what London has to offer. Not only does this verdant paradise have a maze of walkways, tree-lined waterways, sculptured topiary and a huge domed pavilion (all thanks to German landscape architect Emile David), but it overlooks the Douro River too.

Just you try and resist diving straight into this breathtaking pool. Go on, we dare you. Designed by famed Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza Vieira, Marés Pool is quite literally built into the rocks that divide the land and the ocean and is quite a sight to behold, let alone swim in. Although do be sure to take a dip, as it's filled with salty seawater and is great for floating your cares away.

Eating in Porto

The first time you take a bite of a francesinha is a time that is sure to stay in your mind. Warm and savory with a medley of meats and more than a hint of melted cheese in each forkful, this dish, traditional to Porto, is in a category all of its own. Calorie bomb, meat-lover’s dream, and drunk sandwich are just three ways to describe the francesinha, but nearly everyone calls it delicious. Here are our picks of the top places to try Portugal’s favorite saucy “little Frenchie” sandwich in the city where it all started

Cómo moverse

Moving around the city

Porto is a fantastic city to discover on foot but if you wish to visit landmarks such as the Castelo do Queijo, Foz do Douro, Parque de Serralves, Matosinhos or the Port Wine cellars, the best option is to use available public transport such as the Metro or Bus, Uber is also a good way to move around the city.
