Whether seated in the friendly garden or candlelit interior, you'll feel at home in this Red Hook gem that former rocker/dominatrix Erin Norris built from scratch - twice - the do-over coming after superstorm Sandy struck the neighborhood just before opening... one of my favs

a little out of the way (a couple neighborhoods over in Cobble Hill), La Vara is a unique North African and Jewish influenced tapas experience. Started by the same duo that opened El Quinto Tinto and Tia Pol in the city, La Vara serves up inventive, mouth watering flavors with impeccable presentation, makeing it impossible to keep more small plates from coming. Recent specials include calamari and beans camouflaged as pasta or stuffed rabbit with prunes, sweet onions and saffron. Paired with an exceptional Spanish wine list... Oh, also great for brunch! If they're booked, show up at the bar, there's usually room! Plenty of exceptional vegetarian plates as well.
