Neighborhoods

I would recommend trying our restaurants and enjoying all that DC has to offer with easy access from this neighborhood. Also, take a short 10-15 minute Uber/Taxi ride to Georgetown for fun night.
Logan Circle was part of Pierre L'Enfant's original plan for DC, and was called Iowa Circle until 1930, when Congress renamed it to honor Civil War hero John Logan. Logan Circle is my favorite walking neighborhood in the City. We are right downtown and yet very much a vibrant walking neighborhood free of traffic. Walk to all of the restaurants and shops you desire and bicycle (local rentals), scooter (local rentals) or Uber/taxi for a 5 minute ride to most of the monuments and the National Mall with all of the museums!! Many of our guests walk to the National Mall. It is flanked on one end by the Lincoln Memorial and the other by the Capitol.

Georgetown was formally established in 1751 when the Maryland Assembly authorized a town on the Potomac River on 60 acres of land belonging to George Beall and George Gordon. ... Congress incorporated Georgetown as part of Washington City in 1871. After the Civil War, large numbers of freed slaves migrated to Georgetown. Now, Georgetown houses a College, multiple restaurants and gardens to visit, small museums, Grand houses to view, a canal, restaurants with views of the water, and lots of clubs and bars. Great place to visit for a day but I prefer Logan for a stay:)

Washington's inner City is loaded with History and lots of vibrant exciting growth!! The neighborhoods are most often integrated with the History of this City and definitely one of my favorite reasons to live here!!
The National Mall is America's most visited national park, where the past, present and future come together. The monuments and memorials in this park honor American forefathers and heroes who paid the ultimate sacrifice in service to this country. Explore the swath of land nicknamed “America's front yard. Capitol Hill is the seat of the U.S. government, home to the domed United States Capitol, Senate, Houses of Representatives and the neoclassical Supreme Court. It’s also known for the redbrick Eastern Market, where vendors sell produce, meat and cheese throughout the week, and handicrafts and antiques on weekends. Barracks Row is lined with an eclectic mix of bakeries, pizzerias and global eateries. Capitol Hill is now a great family oriented walking neighborhood with the Capitol, Supreme Court, Library of Congress, Folger Shakespeare Library, and Eastern Market right in your back yard. Fun walking neighborhood to visit for a day. There are great restaurants in the colorful neighborhood while visiting the government buildings.

The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM) is the United States' official memorial to the Holocaust. Adjacent to the National Mall in Washington, D.C., the USHMM provides for the documentation, study, and interpretation of Holocaust history. It is dedicated to helping leaders and citizens of the world confront hatred, prevent genocide, promote human dignity, and strengthen democracy.[2] The museum has an operating budget, as of September 2018, of $120.6 million.[3] In 2008, the museum had a staff of about 400 employees, 125 contractors, 650 volunteers, 91 Holocaust survivors, and 175,000 members. It had local offices in New York City, Boston, Boca Raton, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Dallas.[4] Since its dedication on April 22, 1993, the Museum has had nearly 40 million visitors, including more than 10 million school children, 99 heads of state, and more than 3,500 foreign officials from over 211 countries. The Museum's visitors came from all over the world, and less than 10 percent of the Museum's visitors are Jewish. Its website had 25 million visits in 2008 from an average of 100 different countries daily. 35% of these visits were from outside the United States.[2] The USHMM's collections contain more than 12,750 artifacts, 49 million pages of archival documents, 85,000 historical photographs, a list of over 200,000 registered survivors and their families, 1,000 hours of archival footage, 93,000 library items, and 9,000 oral history testimonies. It also has teacher fellows in every state in the United States and almost 400 university fellows from 26 countries since 1994.[4] Researchers at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum have documented 42,500 ghettos and concentration camps erected by the Nazis throughout German-controlled areas of Europe from 1933 to 1945.[5]

The former residence of businesswoman, socialite, philanthropist and collector Marjorie Merriweather Post, Hillwood is known for its large decorative arts collection that focuses heavily on the House of Romanov, including Fabergé eggs. This is one of my Partner's favorite places and is in Georgetown. He is a Landscape Architect. Dumbarton Oaks is a historic estate in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, D.C. It was the residence and garden of wealthy U.S. diplomat Robert Woods Bliss (1875–1962) and his wife Mildred Barnes Bliss (1879–1969). The Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collection was founded here by the Bliss couple, who gave the property to Harvard University in 1940. The research institute that has emerged from this bequest is dedicated to supporting scholarship in the fields of Byzantine and Pre-Columbian studies, as well as garden design and landscape architecture, especially through its research fellowships, meetings, exhibitions, and publications. Dumbarton Oaks also opens its garden and museum collections to the public, and hosts public lectures and a concert series. Dumbarton Oaks is distinct from Dumbarton House, a Federal Style historic house museum also located in the Georgetown area. Early history The land of Dumbarton Oaks was formerly part of the Rock of Dumbarton grant that Queen Anne made in 1702 to Colonel Ninian Beall (ca. 1625-1717). Around 1801, William Hammond Dorsey (1764–1818) built the first house on the property (the central block of the existing structure) and an orangery, and in the mid-nineteenth century, Edward Magruder Linthicum (1787–1869) greatly enlarged the residence and named it The Oaks. The Oaks also was the Washington residence of U.S. Senator and Vice President John C. Calhoun (1782–1850) between 1822 and 1829. In 1846, Edward Linthicum bought the house, and enlarged it. In 1891, Henry F. Blount bought the house

The Old Ebbitt Grill, Washington's oldest saloon, was founded in 1856 when, according to legend, innkeeper William E. Ebbitt bought a boarding house. Today, no one can pinpoint the house’s exact location, but it was most likely on the edge of present-day Chinatown. I just recently added it because MANY of our guests have raved how much they enjoyed it.

The Food is fantastic!! Walk through the door at Gypsy Kitchen, on Washington, D.C.’s bustling 14th Street, and you’ll know you’re about to experience something special—an eclectic bohemian escape & culinary adventure. The seductive dining room is filled with richly patterned woven rugs and tapestries, softly glittering lights and vibrant Moorish tiles, with cozy vignettes that foster intimate conversations. Head up to the rooftop patio where unobstructed city views and plush cushions welcome guests to settle in. Just like travelers collecting favorite memories and souvenirs, our team has gathered the most compelling flavors and techniques from Spain, Greece, Lebanon, Morocco, Israel and beyond. Our menu is peppered with familiar ingredients like housemade hummus, whole roasted branzino, roasted lamb, serrano ham and succulent grilled prawns. You’ll also find lesser known, delightfully flavorful creations like smoked duck prosciutto cured with oranges and Turkish coffee, tuna crudo with harissa and squid ink tuile, and whipped labneh with za’atar-roasted local legumes. The menu of shared plates is formatted so you can wander and explore to your heart’s content, guided by our gracious staff. Our cocktails incorporate the same exuberance, with distinctive flavors, lesser-known spirits and creative techniques, while the carefully curated wine list lets guests uncover new favorites from the Mediterranean’s many coastal wine growing regions. Whether it’s a romantic dinner for two, drinks with friends on the rooftop under the stars or a low-key weeknight bite, every visit to Gypsy Kitchen feels like a celebration—of the romance of travel, culinary curiosity and joyful connections made over a terrific meal.

If you have never been here before as a tourist in Washington

If you’ve never been before, it’s hard to know where to start. A guided tour gives you a good overview of the city, gives you a taste of the most popular places, and helps you get oriented so you can better explore the places that interest you on your own later on. If you’d like a little more independence—without losing the advantages of a guided tour—a combination guided tour and hop-on, hop-off tour bus pass is a great way to see the city on your own terms. Some of my guests have strongly suggested this company: www.seedctoday.com

White House?

For many visitors, just viewing the People’s House from the street and snapping a few photos is more than enough. But if your heart’s set on a tour, you’ll be disappointed if you just show up and expect to get in. You need to submit a request to a member of congress—not less than 21 days in advance of your proposed tour date. If you’re a citizen of another country, you need to work with your embassy to get your request approved. Once you know the dates you’ll be in D.C., it’s a good idea to put plans in motion if you hope to get inside the White House. Also, the rules often change for the tour so google search for most current requirements and don't count on us for that!!

Ways to save

Like any international capital, D.C. is an expensive place to visit. The good news is, you can save a lot by spending your time doing all the free things. All the Smithsonian museums are free—including the National Zoo. Ditto all the monuments and memorials. Many of the art museums and galleries are also free, including the National Gallery, the Hirshhorn, and the Freer and Sackler Galleries. And you can spend hours enjoying the gorgeous parks and green spaces that dot the city. Pack a picnic lunch and plenty of water, and you really can enjoy an entire day in D.C. without spending a dime!

Avoid crowds with these great sights!!

Want to avoid the crowds and get some amazing photographs to boot? Plan an evening monument tour. There’s nothing quite so spectacular as the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials, the Washington Monument, and the Martin Luther King, Jr., Memorial brightly lit against the night sky.

SmarTrip cards are refillable cards you can use on just about every transit provider in the D.C. metro area—including the bus, light rail, subway, and even the transit lines to popular D.C. suburbs in Maryland and Virginia. Buy one before your trip; you can always add to it throughout your stay. A one-day unlimited pass is just $14.75, which is a great value if you plan to see a lot of different parts of the city.

D.C. is a waterfront city and a Potomac River boat cruise is the perfect way to see a whole different side of the city. You can also enjoy other water activities like kayaking the Potomac River, riding paddle boats in the Tidal Basin, or taking a Duck boat tour. Don’t miss some of the gorgeous harbors in the area, especially the Washington Harbour in Georgetown and the National Harbor in Maryland. Treat your family to a ride on the National Wheel for spectacular views of the city.
