From quintessential NH Main Street villages to NH’s state capital and Dartmouth region!
New London (20 minute drive) is a quintessential NH village, home to some great Main Street shops, cafes and dining. Look for Artisan's New London (an eclectic, artsy, colorful and fun gift shop), Village Sports (rent a Pedego electric bike to explore the area!), Morgan Hill Bookstore, Grounds Cafe (vegan and gf options, lattes, smoothies, and more), Blue Loon Cafe (great break bakery... my favorites include their sour dough bread, rye sea salt brownies, and their Greenway Trail bread!, and delish coffee), Tucker's (Don't miss this for great breakfast and lunch), the Coach House restaurant at the New London Inn, Switchback Consignment (I love Erica's selections), pharmacies (Scarlett Pharmacy at The Gallery, and Colonial Pharmacy on Newport Road), Clarke's Hardware store and more!

(40 minute drive) Explore historic Dartmouth College and beautiful Hanover, NH. Head North on Route 89 to Exit 18. Take a RIGHT off the exit ramp onto Route 120 and follow right into Hanover (a LEFT off the exit ramp will take you into Lebanon, NH). At Dartmouth, if you LOVE books, be sure to check out Baker Library. And, DID YOU KNOW that "The Epic of American Civilization", painted by Mexican artist José Clemente Orozco between 1932 and 1934, in the reserve corridor of Baker Library, now the Orozco Room, was designated a NATIONAL HISTORIC LANDMARK in March of 2013? "Offering a complex and compelling narrative that covers the history of the Americas from the migration of the Aztecs into central Mexico to the development of our modern industrialized society, the mural is composed of twenty-four individual panels, or "scenes," and covers approximately 3,200 square feet. One of Orozco's greatest works, The Epic of American Civilization must also be counted among the finest examples of mural painting in this country. The Orozco Room was made possible by the Manton Foundation, whose generosity provides perpetual support for the preservation of the Orozco mural. Visitors can view the mural whenever the Orozco Room is open." Source: https://hoodmuseum.dartmouth.edu/learn/k-12-educators/educator-resources/orozco-mural A few other things I love up in Hanover... The Nugget Movie Theater (57 Main St, Hanover, NH) features movies that tend to be more of the "independent movie genre." The Hood Museum is wonderful... (6 E Wheelock St, Hanover, NH) with art, and ever changing exhibitions, and events. A great local stroll or winter skate is Occum Pond. Hanover Country Club for golfers. King Arthur Flour is a totally fun destination spot. And, have kids? Don't miss one of my favorite places... Montshire Museum of Science just over the river in Norwich, VT! (just a few short minutes from Hanover).

(20 minute drive) Warner is just south on 89 at Exit 9. Take a LEFT off the exit ramp. You'll pass Market Basket and a state liquor store (as well as Dunkin and McDonalds) on your left on the way to one of my favorite main streets in the area. Kearsarge Public Market, Bookends Book Store (did I mention I have a book problem? lol) is a great FIND, and Foothills, The Local, and Schoodacs are all very cool. Mt. Kearsarge Indian Museum is also here, and the shorter way up Mt. Kearsarge on the Warner side (1/2 mile hike) can be found from here.

Sunapee Harbor is a quaint little lake harbor area/village in with a view out over our area's largest lake, Lake Sunapee. You'll find some cute restaurants (one of my local favorites is Wildwood Smokehouse on the way up the hill to your left as you head toward the harbor), and a few places to browse. Don't miss Prospect Hill... a great place to stop to check out GORGEOUS original art and lots of antiques and other fabulous findings. In the summer months, grab a cruise aboard the replica paddlewheel steamboat that has traveled the lake for decades. The dinner cruise is about 2 hours long and features an all-you-can-eat buffet. Directions to Sunapee Harbor Coming up from the south take Rt. 89 to Exit 12A. Take a left at the end of the exit ramp. Coming down from the north take Rt. 89 to Exit 12A. Take a right at the end of the exit ramp. At the first light take a right onto NH Route 11, follow for three miles. Take a left at the blinking light, go up and over the hill.

Just down the road in North Sutton, here you can swim, picnic (Wadleigh State Park), paddle board (talk with me about how to snag a paddle board!), kayak, fish, or do one of the area's favorite walks (walk this 3 mile loop around Kezar). DO check out Wadleigh State Park. I take my hammock there regularly, hang between two trees, and read books. DO bring water shoes here... occasionally you'll encounter mussels in the water. All of our lakes have sandy bottoms in the swim areas.

One of my favorite local lakes. Parking permits are required here, though I have an "in" suggestion for you! I love paddling boarding and kayaking here, and when the loons aren't nesting, boat out to Blueberry Island with your picnic and spend the day sunning and swimming from there!

Local Dining

Love freshly baked breads, scones and more? This is your spot. Laurie and Mike have created a warm wonderful location with some of the best sourdough bread you can find. My favorite is what I call their ‘seed bread’... their Greenway Trail bread that is great for breakfast or hitting the trails with! Though who can resist their chocolate croissant, their Chocolate Sea Salt Rye Brownies, and so much more! https://www.blueloonbakery.com/

Mountains, Hiking, Biking, Views and More!

The Whites are a little over an hour's drive way, and offer the outdoor enthusiast or day traveler a great option. Everything from hiking (Steven Smith made NH's 48 4,000 footers a "must do" list for hiking enthusiasts, and you can earn your badge when you complete the list!), to the Flume, the Basin, Cog Railway or auto road to NH's highest, Mt. Washington, to Lincoln and some great ski mountains, picnicking, camping, and more!

This is my favorite area mountain, and I climb it a few times a week in the summer. As my "work out" spot, it's two hours door to door. 20 minutes drive there, 45 minutes up, 30 minutes down, 20 minutes home. If you're just there to enjoy the view (and what a great view!) then take your time and spend several hours there. At the base of the hike, Winslow State Park offers the most beautiful views (and sunsets off to the west), picnic tables and grills (bring your own charcoal). There is a small playground for kids. The gate to the mountain is open in spring through fall, and requires a pass or fee on the way up (I have a pass, so just ask!). the gate closes with first snow, though if you're willing to walk the 0.6 miles from the gate to the hiking trails up, it's FREE then and is a terrific snowshoe (you can even bring a roll up sled for a fun ride down the road on your return to your car). "Kearsarge is a popular hiking destination. The summit is the high point along the 75-mile (120 km) Sunapee-Ragged-Kearsarge Greenway hiking trail which links 10 towns and encircles the Kearsarge-Lake Sunapee region of western New Hampshire. The quickest route to the top is from the Rollins State Park picnic area on the mountain's south ridge, accessible via Kearsarge Mountain Road from the town of Warner. Access on the mountain's western side is from the picnic area of Winslow State Park via the Winslow Trail (1.1 mi) or the Barlow Trail (1.6 mi.), built in 1997 by Trailwrights, a volunteer trail group, for the SRK Greenway. The full Greenway section hike on Mt. Kearsarge covers 5.8 miles (9.3 km) from Winslow picnic area via the Barlow Trail to the summit and via the Rollins and Lincoln trails southwesterly to Kearsarge Valley Road in North Sutton." "Winslow State Park, is located on the northwest slope of Mt. Kearsarge in Wilmot, New Hampshire. The picnic area is on an 1,820-foot plateau with outstanding views of the White Mountains to the north and the taller of the southern and central Vermont peaks. Mt. Sunapee, Ragged Mountain, and Pleasant Lake dominate the closer landscape. A one-mile foot trail leads from the picnic area to the summit of Mt. Kearsarge. A 1- 3/4 mile trail offers a loop possibility." https://www.nhstateparks.org/visit/state-parks/winslow-state-park

I love this hike to a quiet lake up in the hills of New Hampshire. My favorite approach is from the Andrew Brook Trail that begins about 3/4 mile up Mountain Road in Newbury, NH. If you're in for a decent 5 mile hike, continue about 1 mile to the summit of Mt. Sunapee, and take the 2 mile trail down through the woods there, or down via the ski trails. If I'm available, I'm happy to do drop offs and pick-ups so that you can avoid involving a second vehicle if you'd like to traverse this. "Near the top of Mount Sunapee, about a mile hike from the summit lodge, is Lake Solitude. This small isolated lake is in the crater of an ancient volcano. You can reach the lake with about a two hour hike from several trail heads at the base of the mountain. There are four trails that lead to the lake from the base of Mt. Sunapee. Jack June junction Mt SunapeeThe Newbury Trail begins at Newbury Harbor for a steep 3 mile route to the Jack & June Junction, marked by a signpost, where you can turn left to the lake or continue up the hill to the White Ledges that overlook the lake, for one of the most spectacular views around. The Jack & June Junction also intersects with the Monadnock-Sunapee Greenway Trail and the Sunapee-Ragged-Kearsarge Greenway Trail. The Andrew Brook Trail starts at a trail head about 3⁄4 mile up Mountain Road. This is the toughest trail to the summit because it crosses numerous streams that have eroded the trail so much that there are only piles of exposed rock for much of the trail. The Province Road Trail starts at the top of Old Province Road, next to the top of the Mt. Sunapee South Peak chairlift. This is the smoothest and least-used of the summit foot trails. It leads to the summit ski lodge. To get to Lake Solitude from there you have to go down the Porky’s Trail 2/10 mile to the Lake Solitude Trail on your right, and follow the trail for one mile. You may also hike the Mt. Sunapee service road up to the junction of the Lake Solitude Trail. Just follow the campsite signs as you enter the Mt. Sunapee Ski Area. Half-way up the mountain, just after the camping area and near the base of the Sun Bowl chairlift, you will see signs for the Lake Solitude Trail. Continue up the service road to where it intersects with Porky’s Trail near the summit to find the junction of the Lake Solitude Trail on your left. In addition to the unforgettable view from the White Ledges, you can make your way down to the lakeshore to the campsite where you will find a fire ring and a battered old rowboat that some very motivated hikers carried in. You could take it out for a row but the bottom has been patched many times and the craft will leak. Tip: Allow at least 5 hours for the hike – 2 hours each way, and you will want to rest and spend at least an hour at Lake Solitude and White Ledges." https://lake-sunapee-living.com/mount-sunapee/lake-solitude/
