Synopsis. A spectacular walk along the rim of a deep canyon. Trailhead Walk past the concrete barriers and you will see the trail begin in what appears to be a small gravel pit. The beginning of the trail is very steep but the rewards justify the effort. What appears to be a trail to your right is actually an old railbed constructed to haul logs during Golden’s pioneer days and is referred to as ‘2%’. It is also on private land. Trail As indicated, the trail begins with a steep climb but quickly levels out once you reach the remnants of an old road. The road serves as the trail for much of its length but nature is slowly reclaiming it and as such it now makes for a very pleasant walk. There are many opportunities to view the canyon along with three obvious lookout points. At the first there is a kiosk with a warning to cyclists and hikers (see note below). Between the first (lower) and second lookout you will pass a reroute for cyclists. The reroute is required to protect the resident mountain goat population from close and sudden encounters with cyclist. Beyond the second lookout the trail becomes very narrow and steepens considerably, dropping down into a drainage and then climbing back out. The third (upper) lookout is just west of the transmission line. Note The trail is home to a resident population of mountain goats – if you have a dog please keep it on a leash. The trail is also in the Moonraker trail network and is maintained by the Golden Cycling Club and is a popular ride for mountain bikers. Fore-warned is fore-armed. The Moonraker network is quite extensive and there are a number of side trails coming in from the north. Free trail maps are available in Golden that better explain the connections. Walk out door and straight up the road toward the mountains. See a parking area ... then walk up steep hill. It flattens somewhat ... keep walking 20 min for AMAZING view and big drops with rushing Canyon Creek below.

Things to Do

Some things we've enjoyed around the area.
When I was in Grade 3, sitting in my Labrador classroom, I saw a picture of The Bugaboos in my geography text book. I know that minute that I wanted to explore the Bugaboos. When I purchased this pad, I did not realize the Bugaboos were less than 100km away.

Mountain Biking

Just above us ... it's nice to have your fitness dialed in. 5 years ago Mountain Bikers were able to drive up the private road and park at Sanders Lake. This isn't allowed anymore - so you must access the trails from Nicolson (from Canyon Creek or near Jacobs Rd) ... or drive the 20ish km towards the Kicking Horse Ski Resort. Have you heard of the Apps Trail Forks (cycling focused) and All Trails (hiking focused). Both are great at discovering trails all over the world! // The Moonraker, Canyon Creek and CBT trail systems are a superb mix of intermediate singletracks and old roads. Over 129 km of trails offer interesting rides in cedar and fir forests with good views of the valley, as well as meadows, beaver ponds and streams. The Moonraker trials offer classic fast, flowy, single track riding with outstanding views. The system has lots of technical sections, but also many intermediate and some easy sections. Some singletracks have lots of roots. Canyon Creek trail is connected to Moonraker trail system and offers challenging uphill and spectacular downhill along the canyon’s rim. The trail is definitely not for those with a fear of heights. The CBT tails offers an approach to the Moonraker system from downtown Golden. The recently expanded CBT Mainline trails are superb single track rides in their own right. . Visit Golden Cycling Club for more information about approach and trails. Also be sure to check out Shawdows Mountain Trails and Mount 7 Trails! Mount 7 is one of the finest and most challenging downhill systems in Canada. Mount 7 was host to Psychosis, an annual event which evolved into the steepest, longest and fastest downhill mo
