Local History

Character of the area and local history.
An original “outsider” settlement of fisherman lived here who were not permitted to enter the city of the tribes (as Galway was known) because of their status. The area was full of beautiful character with stone-washed white thatched cottages... Unfortunately they were all destroyed long ago by the Free State government due to an outbreak of TB in the area, which was such a pity. The area is so full of history with a local museum, pier and a park dedicated to the locality and the victims of mass immigration from the area - and the west of Ireland in general - during the famine. A local man also built an exact replica of the traditional Claddagh cottages of the era recently - Kate’s Cottage - And this is just beautiful; and a must see for any tourist. There are wonderful storytelling evenings held their during the summer.

One of two of the only remaining arches of the original city wall constructed in the Middle Ages. Beautiful area of the city with many restaurants, the city museum, the old Claddagh pier and many, many swans. Stunning spot to relax in the city right next to the roaring River Corrib.

Traditional Irish Pub

A fantastic “old man pub” as we like to call it. Fantastic old style Irish pub with tons of character and “characters”, a great pint of Guinness to be had, an excellent spot for people watching - and allegedly the place Christoper Columbus stayed in 1477 for a stint before going on to discover the New World. FYI: He also worshipped at St. Nicholas Collegiate Church off Shop Street in the city centre. it’s a gorgeous pub on Quay Street my bear the Spanish Arch with a lovely restaurant upstairs that serves delicious Galway Bay Oysters.

Beach

Beautiful at sunset and sunrise.
Walk the famous promenade, pass Ladies Beach and dive from the diving board at Blackrock at the end of your walk - if you are brave enough for the freezing water! Just be sure to “kick the wall” nearby to Mark the mid-point of your journey before heading back into the City by the Claddagh.
