I used to live on Vandalia Lake, so I knew what to expect from the location - but the house is much nicer than pretty much anything else you'll find in Vandalia. It was the perfect place to spend the weekend while celebrating my granny's 82nd, and it's very likely we'll rent it again in the future, assuming it remains available for that purpose. The main living/kitchen/dining area is wide open and great for hanging out without feeling cramped, and the screened balcony/patio is a lovely place to enjoy the outdoors without being forced to "enjoy" the bugs. Everything is light, airy, modern, and well-maintained. This isn't one of those listings where the photos look great and the reality is worn and dirty - what you see is what you get.

I really enjoyed my stay! The place was exactly as described and very clean. The host responded very quickly whenever I had a question. It was also very cozy and warm, even though we had an extreme cold spell. I definitely plan on staying here again the next time I come to Illinois.

This is our second stay at Grant's place and it was everything we were hoping for. The cabin itself is delightful, but the outdoor areas are amazing! Grant and his wife could not be better hosts. I highly recommend this property!

The 8th Hole is a great place to stay, and I felt right at home! I would recommend this place 100%!

We had a wonderful stay at Mary’s place. Her home was exactly as described and pictured. She thoughtfully stocked it and made it feel like a pampered resort. My family couldn’t have been more comfortable or at home. Mary was awesome and her home beautiful. If we’re ever traveling through again - we’d stop and stay just for the enjoyment. Highly recommend!

Tammy's home was just as the pictures show it. Very clean. Well-equipped kitchen. Beautiful views. Lots of space. We watched deer and other wildlife. The wifi was slow, but we weren't trying to work. Vandalia is close with all the necessities. We even went into St. Louis a couple of days. Tammy was quick to respond when we had questions.

This place was fantastic. It was so easy to find and the checkin and out instructions were so easy! Haley was the best host responded quickly and provided all the info, reminders and clear instructions. I would stay here again in a heart beat!

Gail and Bob were awesome! They communicated well with us as we traveled during the day. Their home is beautiful, clean, spacious and cozy. Convenient parking made unloading and loading simple. The bed? A-Mazing! Most comfortable we’ve slept in a long time! The jacuzzi warmed us to the bones!! We recommend The Hidden Gem to anyone traveling through Illinois.
