The question I most get asked (besides "have you done the Iditarod") is "what do you do with your dogs in the off-season. This field trip is the answer to that. We have a blast all year round. Since I'm an extrovert who loves to share the dogs with people, I thought this would be a fun idea. Here's how it will go. I'll meet you by my house for an introduction, where you'll get to meet the true boss of this operation—Elton, a rat terrier, who runs 20+ miles with the team in winter. We'll then walk UP the hill past old growth white pine trees to the dog kennel. There you will get to meet Pyro and his two grown children, Athena and Zeus; Olive Oyl, Matt Power, Riise Bean, Flin Flon, and Neo. From there, we'll do some basic chores and then decide what activity we would like to do, depending on physical ability and the conditions. We can take a hike with the dogs or just watch the dogs zoom around the play yard. We'll end the outing with dog treats (of course).
I am a musher and the owner of Honest Dog Kennel, a recreational kennel with eight spectacular, charismatic sled dogs (Siberians and Alaskans). I've been doing this sport since 2000 and have competed in small races but mostly, this is all for fun. We go winter camping with the dogs in the winter and take friends and family on rides. I'm a writer by day and the author of Paddling to Winter, a memoir about my 1,700-mile canoe trip from Lake Superior to northern Saskatchewan. I currently am the director of communications at Northland College. The dogs are my weekend and after-work fun in winter and summer.

This entire experience will be outdoors. We'll take a walk up the lush trail of big white and red pines to the dog kennel. We'll spend most of our time with the dogs and if you are up for it, walking the dogs. The trail varies depending on rain. You should plan on wearing clothing that could potentially get torn (via the dogs) and wear hiking boots or tennis shoes. I recommend jeans and long sleeve tees.
