Explore Haines, Alaska with your personal guide! These private tours are uniquely designed to accommodate your schedule, your group and your interests! Your host, Brayton Long, has extensive experience working and living on the waters and in the woods around Southeast Alaska. Brayton loves the land and the history of the Upper Lynn Canal and the Chilkat Valley leading to the Yukon Gold fields. You travel in a 2019 Honda Odyssey in comfort and style. Your journey starts by cruising through historic Fort Seward to experience original buildings standing guard over Portage Cove below. Travelers will then take a short jaunt over to Chilkat Inlet where the glacier fed Chilkat River meets the sea. Rugged snow capped mountains stand as sentinels appearing to touch the sky. Eagles perch in nearby Sitka Spruce trees and soar through the air. Visit one of the oldest working Alaskan canneries where your local guide provides a tour of the operations and describes in detail the commercial fishing fleet. Chilkat State Park is next with a spectacular view of Davidson and Rainbow Glaciers across the inlet. Enjoy a short beach and trail walk to a private cove. Make tracks in Alaska!
I am the owner/operator of Alaska Local Tours in Haines, Alaska. I have lived and worked in Haines as a raft guide for 3 years, lived in the Alaskan bush for 5 years, worked in the timber harvesting industry for 8 years, was a commercial fishing deckhand for 3 years, a police officer for 12 years, and active in the Haines community since 1979. My other experiences are small boat operator, wilderness hiker/camper, and glacier climber. My father was adopted into the local Tlingit Eagle Clan and I have numerous First Nation friends. I spend my time connecting with the local Tlingit natives and study the history of the Chilkat Valley, home to the Tlingits. I know the best eateries, where the eagles gather, location of local trails, the best place to see a glacier from the beach, out of the way coves, and the historical sites.
Snack tray with salmon dip, crackers, grapes, and cheese. Salmon locally caught and smoked.
We will travel by private vehicle to Fort Seward, Chilkat Inlet, Letnikof Cove working cannery, Chilkat State Park with beach/trail walk, back to Haines to Picture Point for views of Fort Seward, Haines, and eagles. Schedule an excursion to the Bald Eagle Foundation and visit the birds of prey. Search for local totem poles and learn their history. Experience the town of Haines, the unique shops, and eateries.
