Qué harás

Put your nose, arms and heart inside the pasta's bread!

We will meet each other in the monterotondo/mentana station, that is really close to some shops were we'll buy some vegetables and other stuff that we'll need for our experience.
Starting from flour, water, salt and yeast, we will create handmade bread along with some typical Sicilian dishes, dosing the goodness that mother nature gives us.
We will learn to use a precious tool: "Our Hands!", and the secrets that my grandmother "Flora" left us, peering at her ancient, and very current "recipe book", which will open the doors of our kitchen, and will host us in this experience where we will be all "Mastri Fornai" for a day.
So we will hear the sound of the knife breaking the crust of the bread just emerged from the oven, and then it will be time to eat a special gourmet lunch inspired by Sicilian Street Food.
Finally it will be the turn of a tour to discover the historic center of Capena, where you can buy different products at Km 0, and admire ancient medieval villages.

Thanks to the lessons of Grandmama "Flora" first, and Papà "Salvatore" later, today I represent my family's third generation of bakers; we started in 1932 with the first bakery in Sicily; today we have two: one in Catania (Sicily) and another one in Capena (Rome). The passion combined with the technique, were the real engine that managed to make us cross the time, without feeling the effort.

If you are anywhere near Roma and have a day to spend with great people learning a new skill book this experience. Francesco, and Luigi, are amazing. We shopped, we cooked, we baked, we laughed, we had a great time!! We made all kinds of food and were encouraged to get are hands in the dough. What we made we ate and it was excellent! Once we made the very tasty Sicilian street food we made some bread. While the bread was baking we took a walking tour of the cute town. Francesco made us feel very welcome and wanted to meet our needs at all times. It really was an amazing experience! I can’t recommend it highly enough.

Francesco's baking experience was by far the best experience I've had on AirBnB and otherwise while traveling. It felt completely non-touristy, but more like being part of Francesco's bakery and family. After over 5 hours of market shopping, baking, eating, and getting to know Francesco and his family, it felt as if we were old acquaintances. Francesco picked us up at the train station and took us on a quick market visit- it's a nice market with much fresh produce. I recommend visiting on Saturday when it's in full swing. We then returned to the bakery where Francesco's girlfriend as well as his partner Luigi met us. Francesco provided us with instructions on cutting and preparing the vegetables for his famous Caponata and other dishes such as his spectacular Arancini. As we were preparing the vegetables, we were also learning about the art of baking bread from him and Luigi. We then proceeded to make and knead the dough into several different bread shapes and types. Throughout the experience we would try different baked goods from his bakery - all delicious. At the end, he even offered to teach us how to make his family's cannoli recipe- amazing! After we were done, we sat down to eat and drink with Francesco, Francesco's girlfriend, and Luigi. We left with a huge bag of our own baked good! In short, if you want to step out of Italy's tourist circuit, and into a real Italian baking experience: this is it. Francesco's hospitality and expertise will leave you with amazing memories.

I booked this experience because I love baking and thanks to Francesco my passion for baking has grown even more! I spent a fantastic day and I got way more than I expected. Fist of all, this is a wonderful opportunity to escape from the city and visit a small village in the roman countryside. For a tourist, this is a way to live the authentic Italian life. Francesco has been a fantastic host, ready to accomodate all my needs and preferences. He told me this experience is usually hosted in his house but since he had a family member sick at home, we went to his baking lab. There we started making so many different preparations: bread (also sweet), pizza, and "caponata" (if you don't know what caponata is... book this experience now!). I have learnt tons and I was taking notes as crazy. All the baking secretes Francesco shared with me are so valuable... I went back home with a huge bag full of bread, pizza, stuffed panini and wonderful sicilian treats, plus the desire to cultivate my baking passion more. Thanks Francesco!
