Eight years ago, due to a fascination with apple diversity and the history of U.S. apple culture, we started an orchard in Ancram, New York featuring 57 apple varieties on 80 dwarf trees.  That orchard has expanded over the years to 150 varieties on 650 trees.   Apples in the orchard have a range of taste profiles including the Pitmaston Pineapple (an apple with a flavor reminiscent of a pineapple) and Hudson’s Golden Gem (an apple that tastes like a pear).   Our orchard includes many varieties of historical significance, including apples once grown by Thomas Jefferson and George Washington, as well as apples originating in England, France and as far away as Kazakhstan.   We grow apples in all shapes and sizes, including 22 russeted varieties and 12 red-fleshed apples. I have over 20 years of experience in cider making.
